I'm not really making a distinction between a laptop or a desktop.
I just want to know if I can record on my computer.
I want to use SONAR (I think), DirectX, and be able to record 8 tracks, at least two at a time.
I have no soundcard except for whatever this thing came with.
Thanks for the...
I have a Tascam 414 and a some cheap outboard gear.
I started reading "Home Recording Power" (so far, THE best home recording book I've ever seen) by Ben Milstead today.
It got me seriously thinking about switching to a computer-based system.
Here's the deal.
I'm not a computer geek. I can...
You can get a good sound with what you have and a 424, but you'd be better off dropping $80 on an SM57 instead of using those crappy karaoke mics.
Then if you have even more, get another 57 or a condensor and put one 57 about 6" from the speaker of your amp, and move the other one around the...
I read on here that putting in a newer quality tube into an ART Tube MP would make it sound better.
So I put in a Groovetubes 12AX7C.
Now, either my Rode NT1 doesn't work, or the phantom power doesn't work.
When I run a battery-powered condensor through the unit, it works. But when I plug in...
I know this has been asked a thousand times but I haven't been around on this BBS lately so I need some info.
I need a cheap compressor to be used mainly for vocals. I'm cassette 4-tracking.
I heard a lot of nice things about the RNC but I've never even seen one. Can you still get them?
I'm...
I'm surprised no one's answered this yet. I'll go ahead and tell you what most would tell you...
DO WHAT YOU WANT! Be creative!
If you have access to the first Ramones album (self-titled) listen to it. The drums and vocals are center. The bass is completely on one side and the guitar is...
I'm not sure where to post this, so...
I'm looking for a software program that I can type and write sheet music on. I don't care if it takes a keyboard or if I can do it on the typing keyboard.
I just want something I can write the music and hear how it sounds, and change it, and listen...
Plugging the guitar in directly sucks. A distortion pedal will help a bit. But running the "Out" of your amp to the recorder should sound fine. It may not sound "live and rocking" but it's always worked on my 414.
Have you tried close micing the guitar amp and putting it in another room so...
Hey, I don't come to this page real often (it goes in spurts) but I love helping people out with recording, so if you have any questions feel free to email me at PannyDeters@hotmail.com
The VS890 may only have 8 tracks, but it also has a shitload of virtual tracks. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that mean you can bounce with almost ZERO sound loss? That means you could have four drum mics, send it to two tracks (for stereo) and still have six tracks left.
How many...
I was thinking that I could use the Tascam as a mixer. My main concern is, "Would my specs be enough?"
And if so, what program is good? What is comparable to a Roland VS880? How much are these programs?
Thanks.
I suggest the Guided by Voices method. To do this you need a mixer.
Get a 4-channel mixer (at least) and plug the four drum mics into it.
Run that mixer into track 1.
At the same time, record the bass to track 2. Do not mic it. That's where you'll get muddy. Just run a line out of the...
I have a sony laptop. I was wondering if I can record on it. It has an AMK550 mobile processor, 64 mb of ram, and 5 gig of hard. I think.
I know that right now I couldn't do it. But I'm about to upgrade to 196 mb of ram (in that area). After that, can it be done?
If so, what else do I...
Are you using "L" (or "R") record mode, or Direct (1,2,3, or 4)?
This makes all the difference.
You can email me if you want at

If you are recording more than five things, then you HAVE to submix or bounce. Bouncing makes you lose sound quality.
Submixing a track is a lot like bouncing. WHen you are done, you have ONE TRACK with several things on it and you can't adjust anything but the whole thing.
If you have a...
I think you are supposed to turn 5-6 ALL THE WAY UP.
Then you use your "Effect 1" knob as a Dry/Wet knob. If it's too loud, turn down the Output of the Unit. If it's too distorted turn down the Input of the unit.
Does this helP?
I believe the recomended way is to use the 1/4".
Keep your Tascam's preamp down all the way, it is a shitty preamp and you just bought a $200 preamp, so use it.
Your preamp is mono (I don't know about the compressor) so use a mono cable.
Both functions should work, regardless of which cable...
You're doing it the hard way.
First, get a mixer. You will use this for what is called "submixing."
Plug each drum mic into a different channel on the submixer. Also plug the bass guitar and rhythm guitar into it. Listen while the band plays. Mix it to where it sounds perfect.
Then record...
I have to do an argumentative paper in my Comp 2 class and I've decided to do it over Analog Vs. Digital.
In the End I'll have to support both over 2 different papers.
Can anyone point me to a good website that lists the pros and cons of BOTH of these formats?
Thanks.
