    Ampex UST-4

I just found one of these at the flea market for $85. Is that a fair deal? I've never seen one before and can't find them listed on e-bay. It comes with the manual and is from 1963. I want something that I can use to record 4 tracks simultaneous. Thanks for any help :)...

    general bass roll off

well, (and this is a gross over simplification) the roll off in bass is done under the premise that your ear is actually only picking up frequencies in certain ranges. to certain extent, rolling them off (the super low frequencies) means you're not losing anything. as you mentioned, deciding...

for all the lost dogs and children of the world

That's true...drums in general just weren't a part of the mixing equation during that time period (hell they weren't really even present in the early beatles stuff) and so stylistically you're right, you can go without. While chess records artists didn't have that element, their predecessors...

    Critical Ears

Oh yeah, definitely. I pick apart every mix I hear...analyze what channel's are being used etc...but still get enjoyment out of it. On the flip side, my initial education was in broadcast and film and as a result I nitckpick and get very little enjoyment from anything on television or in movies.

I actually have no idea where to begin.

Assuming you're going digital and are either playing acoustic or electric and already have an amp: you'll want an audio interface (something that will connect with firewire/usb) or a mixer that you can plug into your computers sound card, probably through the mic input. get a mic...at this...

second real song mix. pop song. please donate your constructive criticism :)

hey man :) thanks for posting again! i can't remember if you mentioned already, are you just recording the drums with one microphone? i ask because i liked the volume for the snare and the cymbals but i think the drums would sound louder if you can bring up the kick. i like the panning on the...

for all the lost dogs and children of the world

Dig it man, sorry to hear about the dog but hope that he finds a home! On to the recording: you're getting a really cool guitar song there...it completely takes me back to exile on main street 'i just want to see his face' and the mix between your vocal and harmonica have a total sonny rollins...

    Dulcimer Song

thanks man...that was the vibe i was going for. i close mic'd things like the dulcimer and guitar, but went direct with the bass and then went for distance on the other acoustic and accordion. there's a few tracks on 'blue' where joni mitchell uses the dulcimer to really good effect...its an...

    my first MP3mixing clinic post

yup (and terry you probably already know this) posting it to one of the other sites people use (lightningmp3, soundlick) can just give a better quality mp3...and mp3's are already bad enough :) now, about this inferiority complex...dude bro, you play like freaking roger miller! that's sweet.

The One by Duesenberg - Final Mix

hey man- nope not bad :) i wanted to throw in my two cents. i was reminded of that peter gabriel song, 'solsbury hill'. really pleasant melody, too. i think this works as a final mix but...i agree with kcearl--bring up that bass guitar and you can bob your head to this pleasant-ness.

    Dulcimer Song

I have a bunch of random instruments sitting around my basement and using them all in a song just seemed fun...would appreciate any thoughts on my "noble experiment" :) http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?id=21603

    seeking rough mix advice

Yeah man, this has been a great forum to be participating in. With that first mix I had reached the point where my ears just weren't cutting it...your perspective has really made it better. I wound up merging those two bass drum sounds and really liked the overall effect. I made a judgment call...

    my first MP3mixing clinic post

First, welcome to the clinic...I've only spent about a week here but usually people are great about just speaking to the mix of a song. That said, I don't know how anyone could criticize your playing or vocals--they sound great. I listened to 'Blue Moon Nights', 'Dreaming', and 'You Tell Me'...

    first song!!

hey man- sound quality wise i think you're looking pretty good, of course i don't know that myspace is the best place to hear a song. i've noticed a lot of people use soundclick and/or lightningmp3 (not that mp3s are the best way to analyze sound quality) but things seemed pretty even...a nice...
