going over to the dark side

have a look at the Fostex vf16. I've used one for years, they're great. 16 track digital. Now quite cheap to buy too. I'm amazed anyone's still recording to cassette tape to be honest!

    PZM Mics for Voice?

I've used a pair of PZMs as general room mics when recording a drum kit with excellent results in conjunction with close mic'ing.

    Acoustic Strings...

I've been using Dean markley Bronze recently. I like 'em. Bit expensive here in the UK though as they're imported. Still, worth paying a bit more for what you like eh?

How many tracks do you use to record drums?

We've been getting great results with 6 mics. Kick, snare, floor tom, tom, 2x overheads. I pan the two 'tom' mics hard l/r, same as the overheads. Other two (kick & snare) straight down the middle. there's bleed on all the mics, but it matters not. I might add the drummer's great and knows...

    Writer's block...

The time when nothing new will come, is a time when you can go back to all those 'old' half-finished ideas and work on them. The worst thing to do is try too hard to come up with something, which will not be inspired, just forced.

nOOb question about how to record singing at a decent quality

Whatever your setup you'll benefit from using a condenser microphone. The best one you can afford.

    Voice Lessons? Anyone Ever Take?

it's never too late to improve either. The voice changes with age, that can be a good thing as a young thin voice can age and gain depth.

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

There's no question that advances in technology have made things possible that were not possible for a solo musician working at home in the 60s/70s/80s. It's not all about replacing musicians with machines. it's giving an individual the chance to create music without having to rope in an army...

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

All depends what you're aiming for doesn't it? if your goal in home recording is to make your own band sound exactly like the production on..say.. metallica's latest album...good luck. if you want to prduce some simple recordings more in the folk/country style...that's certainly achievable to...

    Voice Lessons? Anyone Ever Take?

Why would any aspiring singer NOT do singing lessons if offered/available? The teacher cannot force you to sing in a particular way when you're doing your own thing, that's your choice, but the things learnt may prove useful in developing your own style. So, nothing to lose (except the cost of...

Can 67 year old learn fostex vf-160?

Wow! That's a sorry tale. I'm quite surprised by that (not by the incompetent sales Dept.) but that you think it to be unreliable. I can say I've only got a lock up requiring a re-boot about three times in the 5 years I've been using this machine. it's been so reliable. I wonder if firmware...

Vocal Recording: 1 take vs. punch-ins?

My view is that the ends always justify the means. So if getting it down in one produces the desired result, great, if it takes a hundred overdubs to get the great result, fine. My preference would be to do a great vocal take in one go, you're capturing a performance that way, not piecing...

    Compression... and/or equalizing..?

When you're mixing you don't bring all the instruments in straight off. you first listen to the dums with the other instruments out/muted. Once the drums sound right bring in the bass guitar, twek it as necessary. Once the bass guitar and drums sit nicely together...add the next, maybe guitar...

Anyone got an opinion or own a T.BONE mic

Sorry can't help with specs. The mic looked cool for stage use, is very economical, and performs like an SM58 is all i know. To be fair, I've heard their mic's are cheep but a little hit n miss as regards build quality. The first one i had a screw fell out and the insides came loose as a...

How to market yourself/get in a band?

great bands are about getting the right mix of people together. You can have the best musicians who can't make it work as a band. When you meet on neutral ground for the introductory chat make it clear straight off that neither side is commiting at this stage, you'll meet ,talk about stuff and...

    On the beat... singing

probably about the vocal 'phrasing'. developing your own style. great singers do this. This guy states it nicely: "A tricky way to sing. Rather than strictly follow the time, you sing in a more conversational manner, taking the beat as a suggestion rather than a rule. If you can do this well...

Just what is "0" on the meter then?

I think of '0' as that place you aim to get to, but not go beyond.

Anyone got an opinion or own a T.BONE mic

I own a T-Bone 50s style 'Elvis' mic for live use. Great value and the performance is roughly similar to an SM58. Engineers seem a little worried when i remove the in-house SM58 and replace it with this mic, but soon reassured with the performance. About half the price of the Sure too. Got it...
