A lot of the huge guitar sound is a ton of layers. When my band recorded at a "real" studio there was something like 12 guitar tracks or so for each guitar part. It was insane, but it ended up sounding so thick that you couldn't cut it with a knife. Sorry I can't help more.

A lot of E.H. pedals need their switches replaced. (Especially if you buy one used). And that's what causes them to act up...... They fixed that problem a few years back, so if you bought a new e.h. pedal I believe you'd be safe. If you do decide to look into vintage e.h. pedals, keep swapping...
