    RME.. i am confused

The only cheaper I know is the Fostex VC-8. It is however limited to 20bit and unbalanced IO. And you need to replace the external wall-wart, as the included one gives quite a bit of 50Hz and assorted in the audio :( Maybe the Behringer....

    RME.. i am confused

You do not need to use the expansion boards to get 16 analog IO's. Unless you want them in the pc of course. Otherwise, you could also buy external AD/DA convertors that use ADAT lightpipe as their digital interface.

perfect tiny mobile recorder?? Could this work?

Core audio has stuff like that. And even an input card to record on a PDA ....drool....

    recording LP to CD problems

Very probably. The thing is that before you jump to the conclusion that it must be your soundcard because it is an integrated one on the MB, you need to make sure it is nothing else. Otherwise you would pay good money for a card, only to find it is no better because some lousy cable. For the...

    RME.. i am confused

Crazy, you are correct about the digi96/pad. It has a stereo analog IO, 1 ADAT IO and spdif. You can use the expansion boards for internal analog IO. These expansion boards do not support 96kHz. As for the converter compared to the Lynx, don't know as I don't have a lynx. Only have an ADI-8 AE...

    recording LP to CD problems

I think you confused ripping vs burning! Ripping a cd means you transfer the data from the CD directly into a .wav without recording. That way you get a .wav copy of a CD track and can be sure that no AD and DA conversion was used. Use some CD burning application to do this. Like Nero, it can...

    RME.. i am confused

RME makes several types of cards: Hammerfall series: these have a number of ADAT interfaces and spdif. These include the HDSP9652, HDSP9636 and DIGI96 range. (and the MADI card, but that is not for home use I would say) -The DIGI range has analog IO, is discontinued but can still be found...

    recording LP to CD problems

Just to make sure we got the setup right: recording: dual -> denon amp -> pc line input playback: pc line output -> denon amp -> speakers And if you just listen to the input while you are recording it is fine, but the recording itself is not. Strange.... Maybe the monitor is through the analog...

    Multi-input recording question

If you mean from an onboard soundcard, then very probably not. At least not as you sugest. If you get yourself a mic pre-amp, then you can record your vocal on the left channel and your guitar on the right channel of a stereo line input. That would work. Any program that can do multitrck would...

    Integrity of SPDIF??

Best you can do is using the AD converter's clock as a master. In your case that would be the dbx. By gross error I mean clicks, periodic signal loss etc. Not like a minor distortion that you only hear in quiet passages. It will be either all or almost nothing. A suitable cable is any 75 Ohm...

    Integrity of SPDIF??

No. It is just a transfer of digital data, just like an ethernet connection of -heaven forbid- a floppy disk. Unless of course you pay no attention to things like who is master for clock, use a suitable cable with reasonable lenght and so on. But then you will have gross problems.

im going insane! serial ata drives dont work with pt??

You can just as good have pci saturation with a controller integrated into the southbridge as a separate on the external pci bus. Inside the southbridge, the controller is just running on an internal pci bus with the same limitations. An external controller may be more suceptible to it as it has...

im going insane! serial ata drives dont work with pt??

A lot of sata stuff out there is nothing more than standard ata converted to sata in the chip, and then back to ata on the drive. So there can be a bit more latency. But I have a couple of ata drives sitting behind a scsi-ata bridge and even that never gave troubles! And there is more difference...

im going insane! serial ata drives dont work with pt??

I would like to hear a solid technical explanation why an application running on any OS cannot deal with drives supported by that OS. As some mentioned before, the application does not have access to the drives directly. All drive calls are handled by the OS and its drivers. Same goes for the...

Is there much difference between 500M RAM and 1 gig?

There are a few subtilities: http://firingsquad.com/hardware/building_gaming_opteron_2003_Part2/page14.asp Now this is also relevant for motherboards that use dual channel ram. Most of those have 3 dimm slots. But best performance is only achieved when you use only 2 slots.

Why not plug in a mic while phantom power is switched on?

Well, you do plug in all your equipment into a working 220V outlet don't you? I always tought it has to do with both pins of the connector carrying 48V (pins 2 & 3) not making contact at the same time. Some mics use a transformer between pins 2 & 3, with a center tap that is used to take the...

    $#!t$#!t$#!t SATA hard drives!

As far as the drive is concerned there is no difference between ide and sata. It is just the same mechanics with a different interface/cable to it. It still has to push its data accros the pci bus.

    Dual processors

Don't forget that you will need registered ram! Some boards may let you use unregistered ram, but only for a max of 2 dimm slots, since you want 3 you will have to use registered ram. I'm not sure, but you might check if the 2400MP needs PC2700. I always tought that PC2100 was enough (and...

    $#!t$#!t$#!t SATA hard drives!

Live can be simple with scsi :) Nice to know, I'm trying to make my mind up about switching to ide/sata or staying with scsi. The more I read about it, the more I likely to stay.
