Can someone explain a mic preamp in non technical terms?

Op amps are pretty interesting components, to me. Other than straight out amplification, they have uses in summing, balancing and unbalancing actions, filters, phase change circuitry, buffers and line drivers.... all sorts of stuff you can do with them. As an electrical engineering student...

    Mic problems: high-pitched hum!

Unless the input is a balanced TRS connection, which I doubt it is if it's a crappy standard style sound card, you wont get the benefits of a balanced cable. What you actually might get is a stereo signal coming in where the left and right are of opposite polarity, and if you take one side of...

    Mic problems: high-pitched hum!

A balanced cable wont do much if you're not running between two balanced connections, which I doubht it is. Where exactly is a 1/4" instrument cable being hooked u between a mic and a sound card?

    gain-staging: balanced/unbalanced

I dont see why you would need such a thing between two line level pieces of gear.

this was pretty cool (sorry if its a duplicate thread)

The bus is plenty loud. If you get too close, the proximity effect will make the BRRRR of the engine unnecessarily loud. If you really want that close mic'd sound, aim it at the windshield about 6 inches away.

    Drum mic placement!!!!!

Yeah, I'd say it's actually a fairly common practice. Personally I've never found the need, but I've seen it done many a time.

X-Y overhead miking - need advice from those familiar with this technique

If your mics are about a foot apart, you're not doing it in XY. The point of an XY placement is to get the capsules as close together as possible to minimize problems due to phase difference. If the way you're doing it doesn't center the snare and kick in the mix, you might want to adjust the...

    Can playing style effect recording?

I remember the journey of learning to sing on a recording. It's almost like learning to sing into a mic, really is an acquired skill. Now it's no problem. I agree that recording performance is quite a skill that improves only with practice.

    shouldn't micing rhyme with slicing?

I've often used mic'ing as if I'm taking mic and just "throwing" "ing" onto it. It's not a very technically correct way. I'm inclined to think of miking as the more technically correct term. OMG I HAVE THE ANSWER 'enmikenizing' That's the one

    Drum mic placement!!!!!

Yes, they make mic mounts that clip onto drums. Other than that, you'll want one stand per mic, unless you have some sorta multi-mic stereo bar mount or something... You dont need special stands for somehtin glike a hi-hat, just use a boom stand. Put the stands wherever the hell they need to...

USB and FW to multi-track at once?

TRS is tip-ring-sleeve, which is basically like a "stereo" 1/4 style jack connector. Most of the time in music gear, something with TRS in's or outs will be using it as a balanced connection - has a positive and negative version of the signal along with a ground. Same thing as a mic cable, how...

    Motu 828 Input Gain Question

Yeah, those six knobs are setup, parater, alue, select, mix buss, and cursor, and they're all for adjusting settings regarding the unit's operation, and the mix of how the signal at the inputs is being sent back out various output pairs for monitoring purposes. No actual level control for the...

    1820 & Counter Strike

Should work just as well I'd think. Mainly in games I rotate around while listening to the sound to get a better feel of where it's coming from.

    shouldn't micing rhyme with slicing?

Hehe, not that it matters, but I always feel compelled to point out when people say that, that french fries aren't called french because they allegedly come from France (not a legitimate country), but because they are "frenched", or sliced in that particular manner.
