    Looking for ideas

OK, maybe that wasn't so plain and simple. But operationally, what I care about the most is the mic connectors and a gain knob. Instrument input is secondary, as a clean DI box can always solve the problem of not having a dedicated instrument input. Line level input could be useful, but...

    Looking for ideas

How bout a plain and simple pre... XLR mic input, line input, and hi-z instrument level input. All connections on back, plus a duplicate of the instrument input on front using a high quality 1/4" jack (the kind with the smooth-topped nut, black) like <img...

    compressors use different circuitry why?

Hahahahhahaa Those essays get me every time, Willis. I'm going through a thread and see "An essay on ___" and bust out laughing.

For the "I only have crappy gear" crowd...

Wait a second... My acoustic guitar sounds great, and I tune it up well, yet my guitar recordings still sound NOTHING like the instruments in this recording???? Reckon I need some 012's to get that "orchestra effect" since I dont have protools.

    *Download* VST Plugins

SIR rocks for reverb. I also like the some of the kjaerhus classic series, and use blockfish on some things also.

    CAD M179 for vocals/acoustic

I almost always use it in cardiod mode, unless I have a particular reason to do otherwise (so far other than fiddling around with M/S miking since I finally have a pair of multi-pattern mics, I haven't had one). http://www.crapshaith.org/music/goodbyetoya.mp3...

    Kickdrum Mic

There ya go, some more conflicting opinions! I will say that I have a CAD KBM412, and I dont reccomend it over any of the mentioned mics. I've gotten some decent results out of it with a lot of eq, but it's just not open enough, too constrained and boxy sounding to get more than a woompf...

    CAD M179 for vocals/acoustic

I have both the m179 and the 990, and I tend to like the m179 better. One thing to keep in mind is that it doesn't have as much of a hyped upper mid as a lot of condensers, so that's what you might be missing. I often boost a couple db in the upper mids on vocals, and I've found that if I cut...

    What guitar preamp will.....

Wait a second... why did you go from a preamp to a mixer direct to a recorder? Unless you're using eq or mixing down multiple things to one track, sounds like the mixer is a completely useless part of that signal chain. =(
  12. mattamatta

    low latency?

Well latency is the time it takes for the signal to go into the software, do it's stuff, and come back out, which will be a small amouht. It's the reason things come out a little bit delayed when monitoring live through the software. A lot of times, low latency is good because you minimize the...

Mixers: analog vs. digital vs. me

Yeah, just go with analog unless you need a digital mixer for some other reason (perhaps you're integrating it very highly with something designed to integrate with it, for example). Basically you're just using it for pre's and possibly eq's, and perhaps some basic mixdown. I'm all for an...

    Tuning a bass

I have a bass! I would like a better one, though, but that costs money, which needs to go to pre's and a new geet amp, and other non recording (gasp!) stuff.

    57 in the kick

Also you might be overloading your preamp, as the 57 should be able to take some serious SPLs

    57 in the kick

Try getting it back from the beater a bit. I've had some good luck with a 57 on the kick.... my kick mic sucks and is just so muffled and boxy sounding that, while the 57 lacks the low end, it captures everything else with a much more true sound.

Question about triggers for an acoustic set

If you get drumagog, all you need are close-mic'd tracks. There are some filters and such to try and pick indiviidual drums out of, say, an overhead track, but it's a bit of a stretch to get it to work well. Any close mic'd track however, is almost magic in that you turn the plugin on, select...

Anyone ever changed a ROM chip in outboard gear?

You can probably find one at radio shack, or any computer store, or something like that. I dont think it'd be too expensive. When I work with things inside my computer, I leave it off yet plugged in, as the case is safety grounded. I dont use a strap, I just touch some metal on the case to g...
