Off-the-wall technique, has anyone tried this?

"Random" noise (or any random process) doesn't work that way. You're not subtracting the same thing, only a thing with a similar average and distribution. You're summing the noise together, which will do quite the opposite. I imagine it could be possible to get something really regular like a...

Amazing noise reduction technique - CRT

You're not alone! I, too, still use a CRT. Man, I haven't posted here in years....

    firewire in general...

Not a major point, but I'd like to point out that this is something to be careful of - a lot of people seem to be grabbing up these trend of mixers with a little a/d section built in thinking that they'll be a suitable "interface" for them, and finding out that they only transfer a stereo...

    pre-amp with 2 channels

The tascam is a "sound card". Sure, you'd be better off running from your pre into better line buffers and A/D, but unless you want to pay a lot more, you're only going to find something different, not necessarily something better. Just run from your pre into the line in(s) on your US-144 and...

Recording With Computer - USB or Firewire Mobile Recording Device

Take a look at some of the presonus ones now (firebox firepod/fp10/firestudio /whatever-they're-pushing-now-as-1-space-unit), they've been pretty popular for budget interfaces, as has M-audio. Personally I use a a MOTU 828mkII, but you may want something cheaper or with a focus on a different...

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

I just wanted to record some stuff, and had very little understanding of what a "pro sound" would even entail when I first started. Then, after a while, I wanted to record some stuff better. Then better. Then better. Etc. Now I'm a lot more demanding in terms of the quality of tools because...

    Download and Mix Contest

Yeah, I'll have to play around with the kick some more using speakers. So far I've just been fiddling around with some phones for the sake of playing with the tracks, and I suspect the thump component is lost down below what the phones are giving me. Something in the mids in the track just...

    Life is Murder...

I just have to comment on this... I've been listening to this song a lot last couple days - which says about as much about the music as anything else, in my opinoin! Gotta add a +1 on what everyone is saying about the rhythm section. No wonder you get comments on the bass tone - I don't think...

    Download and Mix Contest

Any idea what kind of mic is on the kick? Whatever it is, I'll have to be sure to get something else  Sounds like a cardboard tube to me, but I'll see if I can make it sound more to my liking!

    how to fix distorted snare??

Some sample I've used seemed to come in a bit off in the file, like theyr'e triggered on time, but the file plays as more of a "slow" instrument. Try different samples, see if you can find one that works better.

I can see it but can't hear it (LE)

First thing that comes to mind is make sure it's not being input monitored. Often times I'll have it monitoring during record, then I go to playback and get nothing until I turn that off.

    reverse reverb (SL3.XX)

You've got it right in the first half of your sentence... The track is normal.... then you reverse it, and end up with this: Track: reversed Reverb: doesn't exist yet Then you apply reverb, and get this: Track: Reversed Reverb: "normal" (as in it follows in time your reversed audio) Then...

Let me have it......How bad is it.

I say definitely bring up the distorted guitars. I feel like this huge thing comes in like it's gonna slap you in the face, but then is quiet and kinda poops out. Not too much though, but it just feels held back because it's kinda "supposed" to be a big contrast and come powering in, but...

    "Retrospectful" is released ...

Sounds pretty good. Seems right for the music. Perhaps people will chime in if you wait more than a matter of hours after posting to decide that nobody's replying.... Edit: Oh, and by the way, I strongly suggest changing the font color on your website, and/or looking into a more washed out...

    how to fix distorted snare??

How are you lining up hits using drumagog? Just put it on your snare track and pick your poison/sample.... seemed to work automagically for me when I had a working trial version.

Solved Sample - mda Stereo (turn mono track into wide stereo image)

I used to have the full big old pack of MDA stuff, used to use MDA stereo quite a bit. I guess I just don't end up needing to stereo-ify stuff much anymore.... usually it's either tracked stereo, or placed where I Want it with delay/verb to create some space

How much RAM for Rock music?

I've gotten by with 256, and I get by now with 512 (on an aging 1.4Ghz CPU). If I've got a big project running, I will sometimes have to freeze some tracks with lots of processing in software to keep the performance up, so I definitely do notice it getting toward it's potential, but it can be...

    PCI Firewire Card

I use a MOTU 828MkII with a PCI firewire port all the time. I do recall seeing that MOTU will only support cards with the TI chipset. The only issues you'd be likely to run into is driver issues regarding how that piece of PCI hardware runs with your motherboard, and I'd expect it should be...

    Frequency Chart

Yeah, that's not a bad chart at all. I went in there with the attitude of "great, another frequency chart for people to find "how do I eq a ___", but left thinking "actually, that's pretty cool". Some of the interactive stuff and notes are definitely pretty useful, and I think it would be a...

    Can't hear MIDI recording.

To expand upon that a little bit, what you've recorded is just information as to what notes are played, and when they start/stop. This information goes to some sort of sound generating device that does some sort of music-making using this data, which is what's happening when your keyboard plays...
