If you could work with a big-time producer, who would it be and why?

Boy, this went in an unexpected (though I suppose not unforeseeable) direction. Sorry I missed the other thread - this wasn't the kind of thing I expected to have much success searching on. Anyway, I probably should have shared my own ideas to set an example. Though I believe some do, I don't...

Do you always gate your kick mic channel?

It's mostly curiosity. I'm in the middle of a project that was attempted last year at a drummer's place. The results we unsatisfactory. In these earlier attempts, the drummer had no port on the kick reso. He hits very efficiently, too, which meant the kick mic was out 12 inches from the...

Do you always gate your kick mic channel?

I wonder if a gentle-slope expander in front of a gate might help you guys who use them.

Do you always gate your kick mic channel?

This will work or might even be necessary if there's too much bleed. I'm liking the consensus here. I've never been one to gate but my most recent work is shaping up to include some of the nicest recordings I've ever captured, especially on a drum kit with just a few mics. I'm just checking...

If you could work with a big-time producer, who would it be and why?

I'm curious. What about their history or recording techniques draws your attention?

Do you always gate your kick mic channel?

Or do you let it bleed a little bit? If you use an expander rather than a gate, that applies here. I don't notice much of a difference in the drum mix or the overall mix either way in my current project, but if it'll clear up significant mud down the road I'll consider it. FWIW, the mic was...

Can Clicks kill the life in a recording ?

I try to avoid this myself. But, for your listening pleasure, listen carefully to the drum intro to Weezer's "Undone - The Sweater Song". The click from the dummer's headphones comes through in the overheads.

What does it take to acoustically couple two spaces?

I've got a small room that has OK dimensions, but it can get a little washy and muddy. The room has a closet with a staircase inside that goes up to the attic. Similarly, the room opens to a hallway at the top of a staircase. Is opening a doorway enough to couple these spaces?

    Recording bass guitar

Haha, see edit. I don't like the phrase "same difference." It makes me as mad as drop-Q tuning does.

How to record guitar and vocals without vocals mic picking up guitar

This is what I would suggest. Use a figure 8 on the guitar with the null pointing at the vocalist. Use a cardioid mic for the vocals, in close.

    To Choose a DP-24

I've got it. It's not the same as other DP recorders. Had to do some reading about this to make sure, that's all. Thanks.

    To Choose a DP-24

With my DP-004 I have to go into a menu and select "Export Tracks" (or similar), then select the tracks to be exported as WAVs. The machine then does a little calculating while I wait and my files are ready for transfer. With the Zooms I understand that this "export" function is unnecessary...

DP 24 Should I record at 24 bit?

24-bit, yes. 48kHz, no. 24-bit will increase your fidelity by decreasing noise floor and quantization error on really quiet sources. That means more headroom for you. 48kHz only increases the highest frequency you can capture, and at 44.1kHz that's already theoretically beyond what you can...

    To Choose a DP-24

Thanks for the info. I plan on using the unit to record on-location (usually in a drummer's place) and for overdubbing. Then the tracks will be dumped to a PC for editing, effects, and mixing. Seems to me the DP-24 is better at the "whole thing done in the box" stuff and the R16 is more...

    To Choose a DP-24

Did anyone here compare the DP-24 to the R16 or R24 and choose the DP-24? I have a few questions before I take the plunge. How are the DP-24's preamps? I have read some complaints, but no direct comparisons with the Zooms' preamps and certainly fewer disparaging ones compared to those on the...

    MXR 990 or MXR V67G ??

The V67G has a better reputation than the 990 as far as I know. I have been down that road as I have two 990s and a few other mics. If you have to have a condenser, you might look for a used RODE or an sE. I don't own anything ultra-fancy, so my input is biased in that sense. Still, I...

Martin HD-xx vs D-xx for recording...

The H only means it has herringbone inlaid binding. They are more expensive, though, so maybe Martin picks different wood. Dreadnoughts are very big and boomy.

I Have to get an amp

If you can't find a Hod Rod Deluxe, the next best thing is probably a Mustang if you're not going to be hard on it. Light, loud, and the clean and semi-clean tones are fantastic. The Bassman model is amazing. I had one that I took back because the jog wheel was kind of iffy feeling, but...
