    Using a pencil with plosives

Post of the year, Glen. Unfortunately I have to spread reputation around.

    Scrubbing?

Don't associate the word with "cleanup". Scrubbing is a feature that lets you play back a chunk of audio by highlighting its waveform on your monitor or screen.

Reverb on Bass Guitar and Kick Drum tracks…

Glen, just out of morbid curiosity, will a convolution reverb act more naturally? I mean, clearly it will be more natural-sounding, but will it display the frequency-dependent response variations you talk about?

Reverb on Bass Guitar and Kick Drum tracks…

noisewreck beat me to the suggestion about high-passing the bass signal (i.e. with a buss) prior to adding the reverb. +1. Anyone here notice the spring reverb on the bass (left channel only) in the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army"? I think it's there more for effect than for ambience, but...

Slight buzz from pickup on Squier bass - normal?

J-Bass pickups are generally single coils, so you're probably noticing interference (60 cycle hum). It would be as much a problem on any J-Bass with traditional electronics, though you might be able to help cut the noise (short of a pickup swap to noiseless pickups) by shielding the body...

    Any tips on layering guitars??

This thread got me thinking: Not a one-man-band, but a one-man-droning-electric-phasing-Westernized-six-string-balalaika-orchestra!

    Custom-print guitar picks?

My wife and I got custom printed picks to give away at our wedding reception. We went with Clayton, too, and I was very impressed. You can get plain lettering or import your own graphics, choose pick material and size, and the minimum order is very low.

I must advocate the use of an iso booth.

I've never been happy with my vocal recordings. They've always lacked oomph and that "in your face" quality. Well, I just moved into a new place and decided to do some vocal recording in the hall closet, which is filled with clothes and towels. The small, dead space really helped me capture...

    Steal on Philly Craigslist

I'm too broke or I would look into it. I'm not affiliated with this guy at all, but someone deserves a chance. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/1137267274.html He thinks it's a CVR, but it's a vintage blackface Vibrolux (someone changed/painted the grill cloth). EDIT: Well, maybe not a...

Whats the deal with the Valveking?

I don't know about C30s, but the VKs are Chinese. As nice as the features are on the VK, you should remember that the C30 has almost 20 years of success under its belt, with an even longer history considering the development of previous Classic-like amps by Peavey in the 70s and 80s. It's a...

Where have I been? What's with all the small low wattage heads these days...

Also, just because you want to be the loudest band around and knock folks over with the first chord doesn't mean you have to stand in front of your speakers - let the PA do the work, and stand in your comfy spot on stage to watch the crowd squirm in auditory discomfort.

Where have I been? What's with all the small low wattage heads these days...

Nobody has mentioned output trannys. I'm faaar from an expert on anything electronic, but one of the things I like about power amp distortion and a tube amp on the verge is sag. And when you're running a 100 watt tube head into a 4x12, that output tranny is built not to take no for an answer...

    Les Paul Value (pic)

Musician's Friend is selling Studios with humbuckers in that very finish right now - it's called "Fireburst," and there is apparently no upcharge for that paint job.

    Fooling people?

Actually, I meant young! And I agree with you totally about the song. I think we're just talking about two subtly different things: the situations you mention (head bops, eyes welling, skin crawling) just don't happen that often for me, at least listening to the radio - a song has to be truly...

    Fooling people?

Of course, I recognize that what I am going to say rests on the assumption that the music itself has not turned me away. But once I get to that point, even before I try to pay attention to songwriting, structure, etc., I often get a quick thought like, "I really like this mix," or, "Boy, those...

    Bouncing Ball Effect

Why hasn't anyone suggested triggering the sample using a button? All this programming, etc., just play it. Then, if you need the last few samples to be really fast - faster than you can play - can you get it into something where you can edit it visually? Also, if you can trigger with audio...

    3d mixing

I haven't been using this board much lately, and when I do I invariably send Glen rep. I don't do this because I have some need to brown nose, it's because he knows how to get the job done. The above-quoted sentiment should be the golden rule for plug-ins. Edit: "You must spread some...

I don't know if the particular guitar in that photo is legit (I think so, but I'm no expert), but there definitely was a Studio Gem series in the mid-late 90s that had P-90s. The model is not some strange concoction.

    best delay pedals

For rockabilly and country kind of stuff, I say Rocktron Short Timer. Respectable sound, solid build, and $59.
