How to record a decent signal without clipping.

Using studio one pro to record vocals, i have my focusrite 2i2 knob all the way down, so as to not exceed -12 even when the singer/rapper is shouting. At this level the input is super low, you can even tell by the build of the wave forms. Should i crank it up? or it is okay to let the singer...

thanks xcali Ive learned to compress the vocals instead of just having them floating in front the beat. what i am trying to do is mix bright vocals. vocals are the main part of a song here... they matter alot. if you have any pointers be free to add :)

As raf pointed out i tried using a limiter on the master bus, just to see if i could get a fair amount of volume but its still on the low end... is okay to balance and mix at -12DB ? because i am finding it very hard to bring the levels back. I know the track is not mastered but its volume is...

Thanks raf. appreciate the reply and the pointers. I will address each individually and see if it makes a difference, one question tho. do you think its possible to achieve a decent mix with the setup i have? not blaming the equipment just don't want to be fighting an already lost battle. Ps...
