    why bother with 24 bit

sure it is, because now we're about to get into a digital quantization discussion where a given part of a sound wave (and its level) occurs at a particular microsecond given one sampling frequency and at a slightly different microsecond given a less details sampling frequency. which is why...

    why bother with 24 bit

Nyquist is great math and all but... for me its not about the converters its about the canvas. when i record at 88khz and put that 88khz recorded track into the EQ, compression, and effects as necessary I am passing those processors a more accurate depiction of the original sound than if i had...

    why bother with 24 bit

I agree completely. Aliasing and such is a d/a problem, not a d/d problem. downsampling in d/d is only a problem when you are not downsampling perfect mutiples. According to EQ magazine when downsampling d/d from 96khz to 44.1khz you have to divide by 2.176870748299319727891156462585. That's...

OK, is this just plain stupid???

i doubt very seriously if you are getting any real high frequency attenuation with just the baseball cap material alone, but i know how you can find out. take the high hat, take your cap, take your head. place your head behind the cap, plug one finger into your opposite ear and have your best...

    Drum samples and digital clipping??

unless you've got an automatic brick-wall limiter at 0 somewhere in the audio chain, even those drum transients will cause the nasty digital crackles. but cutting off drum transients and distortion are two different things. i think the clip setting use to be in options-->audio-->advanced but i...

    Bouncing Tracks, Any quality loss?

but why two projects? your software can't archive (or freeze) the original tracks once you've made the stereo submix?

    About crossfades and Punch ins

pardon my audacity for a moment but: punch-ins are for suckers who think they are still in the reel-to-reel world with a limited number of tracks to work with and difficult editing without splicing and audio loss. why punch in? why not just have a new track and comp the best parts? even if...

    Drum samples and digital clipping??

DavidK what software are you using? Some software packages automatically limit so you don't hear the clipping when you go over 0. for instance, Sonar use to have an overflow setting now I think it just does it automatically.

    the fender stratocaster is perfect.

i have both strat and les paul and the principle reason that i play the les paul live is that its a hard tail (i'm not a whammy guy) and the location of the rhythm/lead switch. volume isn't a concern for me because i use my feet like a southern baptist organ player with my roland midi...

    Upgrade Advantage?

i don't see a need for you to upgrade. sonar 3 has per-project folders right?

Vocalists and their "scratchy / harsch" voice abilities...

I've been attending the stereotypical black gospel church all of my life. i sing the songs, i clap to the beat, i do the occasional strut down the aisles while the bass, drums, and organ syncopate the um... hell out of a tune while the lead vocalist belts it out like he/she smacked the devil...

    Sonar5.2/Reason count-in problem

When i turn count-in on in Sonar5.2, the midi tracks that are rewired to Reason don't play. I had count-in set to 2 measures, a loop range, and a punch-in range inside of the loop range. without the count-in everything works. anyone else having this problem? is there some .ini setting i've...

Mixing the Bass in contrast to vocals

Chessrock I read this quote a few times and started thinking it over. I decided that maybe panning the bass "ghost" a little might just open up the center for the vocals. Then i thought ---> Wait, if panning a guitar this way helps to thicken the guitar sound, then wouldn't panning a bass...

    Mackie 1604 Vlz Pro ??

use to own one for years. loved it but sold it to get a digital mixer. pre-amps are good. my band uses one for live sound.

Mixing the Bass in contrast to vocals

AGCurry is dead on right about copying a track and panning the same signal L and R. All you're doing is changing the volume of the track. you aren't thickening anything. i went through a phase where i would pan the kick and bass slightly L/R of center opposite one another in the mix to try to...

    recording hot

If you want dirt, pushing your converter is not the best way to do it. You can use compression & eq... The Wu-Tang style. or You can use a SansAmp Amp Simulator or Amp Farm plugin... Kany West style, or You can use old samples off of a record player. The S/N ratio and the scratches of...

Proper use of the Haas effect in mixing...

SSG: so the Ghost mono has to be implemented on a system where the panning rule will make use of the effect. Seems to me though that if your system boosts signals that come right down the middle by 3db, and you raise the volume by ghost mono'ing by 3db, you have done diddle poo. lotuscent...

    POLL: How to charge clients

funny, when i was still trying to make music a living rather than a loosely profitable hobby, i was less stringent in getting my money up front. i talked about it but really only applied it to people i didn't know. now that its more of a hobby, i'm actually more particular about it. i'm not...
