Take a look at the very low cost desks built by others on my website based on some modifiable designs of mine..
Most have been built for well under $100.00 US.
Give him some time!
He just finished the desk and has yet to use it but hopes to do so this weekend.
He is studying Recording/Production/Music Business at Berklee so time is somewhat limited.
However, it looks like doing Homework is going to be FUN!

I Build Desks and have helped others do the same since 2005.
If you choose to use a flat table, I'd suggest that you use Speaker Stands.
If you put your audio monitors on your table they will most likely be too low for appropriate listening among other sound related issues.

In the 1970's, companies like Teac/Tascam, AKAI, Dokorder, and others started selling Multi-Track Reel To Reels using 1/2" and 1/4" Tape that cost thousands of dollars below the well known 2"...

Listen to the mics using the headphone output on the mixer then listen to them using the headphone output on the computer and see if there is any difference............
Have you tried adjusting the Gain or Equalization on each microphone channel?
