Thank you Jay. IMHO "fatigue" at that sound level would more likely to be due to mental stress rather than "ear bashing"?
Much of course depends I would say on the material being mixed? If a genre you like and of good musicianship you can probably do a good 3-4 hours at a stretch. Some weird...
I have the SATA hard drive out of a defunct Toshiba Freeview HDD/DVD recorder. I would like to check it for any recordings from years ago which might be interesting.
I have a W10 tower PC and I could easily plug the drive in but I have two questions.
1)Is the drive liable to cause any 'boot'...

That ^ of course is a company local to me. The curtains can still be used for "mirror points", For some in depth larnin' look up "Studio SOS" soundonsound .com
Dave.
Not a "Real Time" analyser but I have used Right Mark Analyser for many years to check for hums and other noises.
One restriction is that it only works* with 16bit .wavs but that is hardly onerous. If printing out the graphs, invert page colour. White on black uses toner up PDQ!
*That might...
Hmm, I detect a whiff of snake oil there? Remember, an open window has a sound absorbency of infinity*, it leaves and nothing comes back. ANY kind of material is going to be worse.
*Well, actually rated as "1". Everything else is less than unity.
Dave.
Yes, a dry, perfectly acceptable room for speech recording. The room might not be quite so good if recording wide band music, especially the low end.
I think people often get confused about room treatment because there are different requirements for acoustic RECORDING and monitoring and...
I completely agree with your earlier point Rob about people speaking of "garbage sound". Audio forums are full of such hyperbolic statements and this is nowhere more true than with the guitar brigade!
Endless "night and day" claims about "NOS" or "Cryo" valves. Often based on a 30 second clip...
Bugger! However there are many, many versions of that S/PDIF converter in the market I bet you could find similar and I also bet they are all the same PCB out of the same factory!
The KA6 should serve you well. I know it works fine on mac and indeed Linux. One problem is that the S/PDIF is RCA...
S/PDIF connections USED to be common on audio interfaces (as did MIDI!) but no longer. If you can find one I can heartily recommend the Native Instruments KA6 sadly no longer available new.
I have waded through some of the Thomann pages on AIs and only two seem to have S/PDIF at under £200* ...
That is interesting. Did you use a simulated guitar pickup source for the tests? Problematic I know because what values of L and R do you choose! What was the difference, if any in the 1kHz insertion loss?
I am not surprised the Radial did better on ambient electrical noise reduction. The...
Not necessarily bloody wrong either! The main deign point of an active DI is to present a high, 1M Ohm input resistance and I am trying to explain that a lower, C ~150k might tame the fizz a bit.
If he spent $20 on a passive DI and absolutely hated it (I am betting he would not) he could...
"Also, I've noticed that there are both $20 and $200 DI boxes on Amazon; would a $20 one even be worth it? Any help regarding anything I've said would be greatly appreciated."
Get the cheaper one Drew,
Firstly for the reason that you have little to lose! But mainly because the more expensive a...
Keep looking. Heard on the news today that China could be looking for other markets to avoid Trumpy tariffs. It was said that we, UK could benefit but Canada might also be more attractive to them now?
Certainly everyone else in the word is looking for new friends!
Dave.
Re "PUP coils and Capacitors" it must be remembered that a responsible manufacturer will test at every stage.
Yes, two hand wound coils will differ (number of turns should not unless the bloke ignores the counter!) in tension and thus inter-winding spacing. That will affect the self resonant...

Give that ^a good read (there is a mention of a limited monitoring function) and if you still have problems sign up to the forum (but DON'T desert us!) Matt Houghton is a very experienced reviewer.
I second (third?) the move to Reaper...
." I am used to analog meters: VU meters. I know what 0VU is. But I get lost with dBm, dBu, db?, +4dB or -10dB whatever unit.
Life used to be so simple."
NOT! Trying to be a dick...REALLY not OMG but it really wasn't!
Yes, "0 VU" was most often equal to an output of +4dbu for pro tape...
Fair enough Mr P. Yes, clean tones will be little affected it is when those upper mids are turned into higher harmonics en masse that the fizz tends to start.
On a related note? I wonder how many budding guitarists here put their instrument through dad's hi fi? Many a tweeter has gone to that...
Old Music Guy, I do NOT think you are in any way a "gentleman's appendage"!
My "physic" replies were prompted by Papa's statement, "The Scarlett if already giving him a DI - so no need there -" and I was trying to make the point that the F'rite's DI will not tame the fizz that afflicts raw...
I am not quite sure of the point you are trying to make friend? Regarding the frequency response of the guitar there are harmonics extending well out to 12kHz (and the MP3 encoder has surely mashed more!)
That of course was a steel strung acoustic but an electric will have much the same...
