Really strugglin to get bass drum thru the mix

If it was recorded out of polarity it could be quite helpful... if it was recorded in correct polarity it could do more harm than help. Try flipping the polarity and see if it helps or hinders. FWIW I have a little over 30 years of professional engineering experience [I'm not necessarily proud...

Really strugglin to get bass drum thru the mix

Which was it? Good? ...or a Sans Amp bass DI? From my experience it would be one or the other... as always, YMMV.

Really strugglin to get bass drum thru the mix

Probably not... but I'll try to shoot you a couple of tidbits that might help... First, lighten up on compressing the damn thing. If your drummer had a "velocity" issue where some hits are louder than others then you may want to add a limiter to keep those [and only those] extra loud hits from...

    An Engineer's Most Important Job

As long as you understand that once you leave the campus ain't nobody going to be asking you to touch that stuff again for many [MANY] moons. If you decide on the career path of the "intern/general assistant-assistant-engineer" road it'll be a few years before you get to sit in the chair as a...

    An Engineer's Most Important Job

I'm not Lee... but I've been gainfully employed in audio/music a little longer than you've been alive so I'll give it a stab. If you really want to "get into the industry" set yourself up so there is no option but to be "in the industry". You have to live it, breathe it, eat it and shit it...

    ART Tube MP

On the bright side you should find it to be a hell of a lot more musical sounding than the Behringer... but is it a "good" [as in "well designed and implemented"] tube pre-amplifier? Nah, it's a cheap piece of shit that is a good interim tool until you can get yourself a real tube [not "toob"]...

    Do I need dedicated preamps

Of course you can expect stellar results. Ain't nobody ever walked down the street humming the mic pre. The only reason to invest in things like pre-amps [etc.] is because you will be inspired to render a "better" performance because you find inspiration in you're hearing in the...

    Suggestions For Micing Ampeg 8x10...

A 57 in the middle of one of the speakers usually works pretty well.

    Bass string "thwack"

A good "de-esser" can work absolute wonders in that application... the de-esser in the Empirical Labs "Lil Freq" is probably my favorite [except for the one in the Pendulum Audio "Quartet"

    Echooooooo

I don't know that program specifically... but I've found that if you roll off some of the high frequency material [like anything above maybe 5-7kHz] and keep the decay time relatively short then you can get away with crap digital reverb... it's never the best thing but it can be a useful tool if...

    ideas, tricks, and pure magic!!!

Try a shotgun mic or line array mic about 15-20ft. off the drum kit aimed at the snare drum [from between the H/H and the Kik drum] at about the same elevation as the snare drum... it adds a 3rd dimension to the audio like nobody's business.

    ideas, tricks, and pure magic!!!

That's great!! What I generally do is take two microphones that I would normally use for both applications and switch them into "Figure 8 pattern". If they don't go into "Figure 8 pattern" then they're not in the running for selection. Lemme explain why [if you know why, then skip the next...

what is the first knob you usually use when compressing.

How long is a piece of string? Give Jim Z a call at ZAC... I usually mix at the "Stonehenge" room there... [or in Room "11" at Tree Sound]. Either way... there are a bunch of great rooms in Atlanta... so I'm sure you'll have a great time mixing. Best of luck with it!!!

has the best sounding band you've recorded been that much easier?

Oh golly... if my last response bummed you out in the slightest... you're really going to hate this one!! About 500 gigs and/or 2000+ studio hours. Huh? You just asked what kind of education I think a band should have BEFORE stepping into a studio and I said like 2000+ studio hours? WTF...

what is the first knob you usually use when compressing.

Gain make-up. Invariably, it hasn't been turned down from the last time I used the compressor so it needs to be turned down before the current operation can commence... hence it's usually the first knob I reach for when I employ a compressor. Best of luck with all you do.

has the best sounding band you've recorded been that much easier?

I forgot to mention earlier... that when you do get one of these bands that wants "everything all the time" [because "it's their sound, man"]... then you figure out a way to give it to them no matter how fucking shitty and confused it makes the song. The beauty of that is that it won't fuck...
