On the contrary; $500 would be hideous overkill. Frankly half that probably would be. I'm guessing you're going to plug this right into your laptop, so you'd want a USB mic? If so, I'd check the Blue Yeti (about $100). Well regarded and very versatile.

Probably the same thing that is with people constantly buzzing about the u87. :) i.e. they're both really good mics.......but they're also really hyped mics, and there's never a shortage of sheeple who will buy them (or anything else) because it's the cool/popular/hyped/etc thing to buy. So...

My impression is that $100ish can get you more than simply "decent" quality, but can't say for sure.

Got me....I would hope you could submit 2 files per song, an mp3 (or wav, whatever) of the recording and a text file of the lyrics.

But how do you protect the lyrics if they aren't crystal clear in the recording? Pls don't say "well make them clear then"....I don't disagree per se, but it's not exactly uncommon for performances to have at least parts where it's hard to make the lyrics out.
