    Garage studio advice

I respectfully disagree. IMO it's a really bad idea due to issues already brought up: the concrete floor, the lack of security, the garage door, etc. Isn't it possible to use a spare bedroom instead? If not, definitely get a big swath of carpet or rugs for the floor and put (heavy as...

    best digital piano under $500

Digital Pianos | Sweetwater I'm not pimping Sweetwater, but this would be an easy way to browse a variety of options. Surprised there was a Korg in that range but can't say how it stacks up to the Casios or Yamahas. I was looking at these before I decided to look for a synth instead. There...

Recordings for Copyright (U.S.) - How extensive a recording?

Just thinking out loud mostly, but I wonder if you record an instrumental and later write lyrics for it, could you just submit the lyrics and reference the previous copyright? Anyone know? (This is a possibility with me as I just want to record keyboards first to get recording down in general...

Qty of songs you are working on ?

You kidding, I always have a zillion songs in various states of development.......anywhere from "nearly done" to just bits n pieces.

Want to upgrade from a MXL V67G mic for Vocals

Why do you assume that? If you like it a lot, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. And for the love of God don't fall into the "I have to spend a lot of money to get good equipment" BS mindset. Now ya got it :thumbs up: Also might want to post here...

    Experiences with mic shields?

Be interested to hear from those who have used and how well it did/didn't work (including of course the circumstances around it...what kind of music being done, what if any other treatments, what mics used etc).

Looking for inexpensive interview microphone (and/or microphone set-up).

On the contrary; $500 would be hideous overkill. Frankly half that probably would be. I'm guessing you're going to plug this right into your laptop, so you'd want a USB mic? If so, I'd check the Blue Yeti (about $100). Well regarded and very versatile.

    Recommendations for upgrades/additional gear

Probably the same thing that is with people constantly buzzing about the u87. :) i.e. they're both really good mics.......but they're also really hyped mics, and there's never a shortage of sheeple who will buy them (or anything else) because it's the cool/popular/hyped/etc thing to buy. So...

Which audio interface should I invest in?

My impression is that $100ish can get you more than simply "decent" quality, but can't say for sure.

    VSTi for dummies question

Thx. Generally (if there is a generally), is it a quick n easy setup and I hope easier the 2d time onward, i.e. you set it up in the DAW and after that it's saved and there when you come back? The appeal of superior sounds is obvious enough, but if it's a hassle every time I want that sound...

Recordings for Copyright (U.S.) - How extensive a recording?

Got me....I would hope you could submit 2 files per song, an mp3 (or wav, whatever) of the recording and a text file of the lyrics.

Recordings for Copyright (U.S.) - How extensive a recording?

But how do you protect the lyrics if they aren't crystal clear in the recording? Pls don't say "well make them clear then"....I don't disagree per se, but it's not exactly uncommon for performances to have at least parts where it's hard to make the lyrics out.

    VSTi for dummies question

Have never used, can someone confirm at a very basic level how these do or can work, not sure I'm clear. Basically you open it up/install to your DAW and using the DAW you configure it to "map" to your keyboard and then play it as if it were just another voice/tone/whatever you want to call it...

    Old newbie

Since you said this is a learning tool for self-critique, you already know about as much as you need to about recording. i.e. you don't really need to know much of anything...go buy the cheapest mic you can find (sory mjb, in this case, you're wrong.....case in point I have an $8 wal-mart mic I...

    Roland's new synth: the FA-07

Tough call offhand. My first impression was huge disappointment; basically an FA-06 with a few more keys (61 vs 76)...for $500 more? Bite me Roland. But then I learned it has "semi-weighted" keys, and depending on how they feel, it might be worth considering for those who (like me) hate the...
