    recording a capella

I'm recording an a capella outfit at the moment. For example, at the moment I've been recording 5 singers with two mics. Later, I'll do it properly (i.e. one singer per track) but at the moment it's two mics: a Neumann TLM103 and an AKG SolidTube. The boys (bass, contrabass and tenor) mostly...

    Connecting desk with external converters

I presently have a 2 in/ 2 out sound card from emagic and I am looking around for an upgrade. I need an 8 in 8 out card lwith an external AD/DA converter ike the MOTU mk2/3 or the Aardvarkq10 etc etc. - the reason being, I'd like to record drums with a track per mic. (as you can imagine, trying...

Can a singer actually be "too loud"?

for tubesrawsom - the problem with adding a pad is that inline pads (i.e. the ones you put inbetween the mic and the cable) don't stop the mic from distorting internally and if she did distort the mic (which I'm beginning to think is not very likely) the pad will not stop that noise in the signal.

Can a singer actually be "too loud"?

My mic chain looks like this: Neumann TLM 103 -> straight into Behringer 16 track desk -> into Audiowerk 2. I know, I know..... Behringer desk...(sharp intake of breath whilst frowning and gently shaking head). That's why I might go for a decent pre-amp. I've been recommended the Channel 1 from...

Can a singer actually be "too loud"?

A singer says she has a very loud voice & thinks this will cause problems when she comes to record in my studio. I have a Nuemann TLM 103, an AKG Solidtube, a Sennheiser 421, a Shure SM57 and a kick drum/Tuba/bass mic Does anyone reading this think it really could be a problem?

    reducing hiss

some synths have a lot of hiss on them and when I compress the signal (out of necessity for the song) I naturally increase the hiss. Is there any way to reduce the hiss when using a synth through an analogue desk and could it be my desk that's at fault - it's a Behringer MX2542A

Is my Opcode Studio 4 a SMPTE generator

I have a Studio 4 midi interface from Opcode. I would like to start putting sound to film via my Mac G4 (dual 1GHz) and Logic sequencer. I believe I will need a SMPTE generator. Can my Studio 4 generate SMPTE? Will it also convert SMPTE into MTC (midi time code) or the other way around? Do I...

    decent strings

nice one Grinder! I have indeed used elixir stings on my Tele. They are quite good. But seriously, I meant realistic sounding orchestral string section "strings" as opposed to guitar strings.

    decent strings

How does one get really good sounding strings in a project studio? I have only a couple of synths and the strings aren't very good. Can anyone advise? Please don't suggest hiring the Berliner Philharmonic I'm on a tight budget here! :D

    bul dump check sum error

I've got a Roland JV 1080 and recently for the the first time ever I got the message "Check Sum Error" when trying to reload a bulk dump I'd saved in my sequencer (Logic). The synth didn't respond to anything - it just kept flashing the message "Check SUm Error" so I eventually switched it off...

Are the electrics safe in my studio?

I have a small studio and I share it with someone else. We are worried that the elecetrics might now be safe because we're overpowering them. Can anyone tell me what is the maximum wattage you can suck out of one plug socket before it gets dangerous? And what are the dangers? Cheers

    two questions about recording drums

Hi all, really great advice. Thankyou all. I've ended up with a Beyerdynamic opus 99 for the bass drum. I have another question now regarding the "direction" that one should point the mic in when recording the snare (and toms). I've heard conflicting advice. Namely: 1) you should point the...

    two questions about recording drums

I have to record drums next week. I've never done it before. I've got one Neumann TLM103, one Shure SM57, two Shure SM58's and one Sennheiser 421 at my disposal (note: no bass drum mic) I don't mind buying a bassdrum mic but which? The AKG D112? The Sennheiser E602? Something by Peavey? That's...
