    Hanging overheads?

Are your mic stands "straight" or "boom" stands? I've found boom stands are best for micing drums. Boom stands allow you to get over or around (sort of) obsticles that straight stands wont let you get to. If you are concerned about boom stands tipping over, simply add some weight to the base...

    Hanging overheads?

With a little imagination and some string, rubber bands, tape, coathangers, and whatever else you might have just laying around, you could rig up some "cradles" to support the mics and keep them pointed where you need them. Remember it doesn't have to look pretty, it just has to do what you...

Why doesn't my record sound like Led Zeppelin?

I just listened to the sample, it's not bad. There are several things you can try to fatten the sound, the first I'd suggest is to record the clip again, this time very clean (maybe just a little reverb or delay) and blend the two tracks together. Most importantly keep in mind the sound you...

    Insulation help

All rooms where audio is a main concern will benefit from adding some bass traps. Tracking rooms, isolation rooms, control rooms, even the room where your entertainment center (aka home theater) is located will be improved by adding bass traps.

    Recording question

Beyond your monitoring consider your CD burner, slowest burning speed yeilds the best quality CDs unless you have a better burner than what comes stock in most computers.

    "the curse of latency"

If you have powered monitors you can try turning up the volume of the monitors and lowering the monitor/playback volume in your software. This wont eliminate all latency but it can help especially if you are using a stock soundcard like Soundblaster or Realteck. Stock soundcards just don't...

    I bet you didn't think there'd be a quiz

Got 9 out of 10 right! I'm not bragging on myself, I'm bragging on the good answers I've gotten on this forum. Most of my answers were based on advice I have been given here. Many thanks to all you guys (and gals) who have given great responses and sound advice.

I actually have no idea where to begin.

Google Tweakheadz. Thats a great place to learn what is available, what it does and about how much you can expect to pay for it.

    Quick question

Another thing worth trying is to use the line in on your soundcard instead of the mic input. This might help a lot to eliminate the hum, maybe not but it is worth a try.

Can I use studio monitors as PA spearkers?

I use my studio for a practice/jam room also, we have a small PA, 4 chanels, 65 watts into 2 12 inch speakers. I know that doesn't sound like much of a PA but in a small room it ts plenty loud enough to hear the vocals over the drums. I gave about $100 for it at a pawn shop. Something...

What to look for in a semi/hollow

Make sure the neck joint is really solid, any weakness there and you will never be able to keep it in tune.

    Audio Technica Pro 63 Mic

I'm not sure about the pro 63, I've got a couple of pro 30s which are pretty similar to the sm 58 but with a little less noticable proximity effect. I use them primarily when recording someone used to playing live where they want to get clocer to the mic than is really nessassary for recording...

    good sized room

Welcome aboard. My main tracking room is only slightly larger than yours (13X27X9) and I've recorded up to 6 piece bands all at once. As already mentioned, cloce micing overcomes the majority of bleed issues, the ones it leaves add room ambience to the project and can often improve the final...

    Hot spots and null zones

The phenomina I'm talking about goes beyond just sound. I can actually feel a difference in air pressure, had a few friends stand in the same places and they noticed the same thing. My studio is in an old house (circa 1930) so maybe it's haunted or something, I haven't eliminated any...

Guitar amps that wives will let you keep in the living room

My wife insists that I keep at least one amp in the living room. She says it's the only way she can keep me home. I can think of a couple of others but I'll be nice. ;)

    Hey VP.

NO! NO! NO! Don't ban anyone, this rivalry is what gives me my morning laugh and gets my days off to a good start. I'd rather read this than Dunesbury, I can appreciate musical satire while political satire zooms over my head. ;)

    Recording a Fender Strat

Sorry guys. I didn't mean to ruffel anyone's feathers by seeming to imply that a Strat is or should be limited to one particular sound. With the variety of amps, efx, processors, vsts so readily available it is just so easy to get caught up in the trap of what can I do to enhance the sound...

Solved If for some reason you could only play one type of music what would it be?

It's not on the list but I'd have to say progressive country, that's the only genre that presently is wide open to anything. Since I like some of all styles of music but not too much of any I feel drawn to the genre that accepts something from all others.

    Gibson Dusk Tiger

Maybe the folks over at Gibson got tired of all the lawsuits and decided to build something only a few people would want (hense limited edition) and certainly no one is going to want to copy. ;)

What did you get for Xmas

The wifey saw to it that I got a couple of new condenser mics, Apex 435 and MXL 990 stereo (not top of the line stuff but a lot better than the Radio Shack stuff I'd been using) a couple of new mic cables and some new shielded patch cables and a half dozen sets of guitar strings. This was more...
