how to tame bass notes that jump WAY out??

upright bass is the hardest instrument to get a good recorded capture of, mostly when is plucked. low string seem to mush under 250, if the person plays one note a little too hard you get a god awfull click, high notes seem to lack sustain and drop out of a mix. best results ive gotten were by...

    poor mans delima

do you have a pair of speakers that youve used for a long time with your stereo? if so id suggest setting those up with your studio monitors and begin a/bing mixes back and forth. you use your old pair as a referance to your new ones. in time this will allow you to gain insight into how to make...

    Learning to mix

while that article is a very solid look at mixing concepts it was also written by someone who has done many many mixes and developed a sense of tones, dynamic, phase and they countless other facets of mixing a song. the best way to get good at mixing is to do it over and over, read as do it, try...

What's the worst professional mainstream mix you've heard

i agree that the new white stripes sounds like ass. wierd mix, out of time sections. i also dont care for the over production of the first mars volta band. good band, good songs, way over produced. vox effect changes for ever line.

    Vocals are too clear

try a windscreen, try a ribbon, try a dynamic, try a de esser. theres alot you can do with mic placement alone but if your recording yourself it makes it a bit more tedious to move, record, move, record, change gain, record. cools got the right idea. clean up your silence sections but if your...

Production Quality, What's The Big Deal?

it seems odd to me you feel that you are required to my a recording of yourself that does not hold with your aesthic in an attempt to get gigs or people to listen to your work. ive worked in live venues often and ive never heard a booker say... man id give this guy a show if only he had some...

    PA vs Powered Mixer: Differences?

well a pa is just a name for all the peices put together to make a live system. your mixer, amps, speakers, outboard, monitors, mics... all add up to the pa. but a powered mixer just lumps the mixer and amp together in one thing. that quote is pretty odd to me as well. i dunno why you would...

    Sorry, quick RNC connection question

are you mixing via the mackie? doesnt the mackie have its own channel inserts? use the insert on the pre only if thing s are really flying around during tracking. if not id say use the channel inserts for comps on the mix. this gives you more flexibility instead of suddenly being stuck with an...

    Starting gear

it all depends on your budget and what you hope to have as an end product. if you just wanna record yourself for fun id say get some multitrack prog, a couple converter/pres, a couple nice mics and some monitors. if your coming at it from the angle of wanting to record bands, yourself and...
