Plugins for an aspiring home recorder

I've read good things about Melda MAutoPitch. I haven't used it myself as I have Melodyne Essential, so I can't give a personal view.

    Melodyne v. Autotune

Melodyne Essential is a good match for that situation.

    Which DAW?

If it's just for mixing down then Studio One Free couldn't be any cheaper. You'd have to rely on onboard effects, though, as this version doesn't work with VSTs.

Best bang for your buck: Orchestral Percussion, Strings, and Brass VSTs?

For strings and brass you could have a listen to Komplete Elements. It comes with lots of instruments and synth sounds and is really good value for money, especially as it comes with a money-off voucher for half the price you pay. But if you don't need all of the extra stuff, then it might not...

Ana - Electronica made entirely with Sonic Academy's A.N.A.

Ana Electronica made entirely with Sonic Academy's A.N.A. synth. Dedicated to the memory of synth pioneer Edgar Froese 1944-2015. Feedback welcome. https://soundcloud.com/garryknight/ana

Should I worry about a YouTube dispute?

Thanks. I did that as soon as I got the email. The link now just goes to some text that says "Your dispute awaiting response by 21/02/2015 ". It also has this: "To watch the matched content please play the video on the right. The video will play from the point where the matched content was...

APC mini Live 8 configuration problems

I don't know the APC Mini but I had a similar problem with my Samson Graphite 25 controller. The manual made it look like it was a matter of plugging it in, telling Live about it, and twiddling knobs to control parameters. Nothing I tried would make it do that. I did a Google search and...

Should I worry about a YouTube dispute?

Recently I used VisualJockey and Sonic Candle to make a video for one of my tracks and I then uploaded it to YouTube. Shortly afterwards I received an email from YouTube saying that the video "may have content that is owned or licensed by PRS CS", which I assume is the Performing Rights Society...

    "Sound of Song"

Watched and enjoyed both episodes so far, but especially this week's with all those old Wall of Sound songs, Brian Wilson, and The Beatles at their height. I posted about it here, in fact. But I had no idea it was on Channel 9. I have to use the Guide to find any channel that's above Channel...

    beginners/books

As David said, the manual is pretty good. I also liked Ableton Live 9 Power by Jon Margulies.

Recorded this all on iPhone 6Plus with Garage Band..(lol!)

It's not so much about the actual value of the threshold. And not even so much about the ratio, though it might seem more intuitive that it should be. There are a lot of explanations of the various settings on the compressor. This one is pretty easy to get along with. Even though it's for...

Listen to the Rhythm (Trance 2.0)

Thanks. You probably heard the remix I uploaded yesterday evening. The earlier ones were mixed badly as I hadn't listened to it on enough different systems. But you're right, I need to pay more attention to getting the kick right. I usually layer two or three different kicks to get the right...

Recorded this all on iPhone 6Plus with Garage Band..(lol!)

Not a song I know but I'm impressed. Very nicely done. It could perhaps do with a slightly bigger dynamic range, ie not just singing loudly all the way through. But I do like the processing on the voice. And... Seconded.

Listen to the Rhythm (Trance 2.0)

Thanks :-) I got feedback elsewhere about the percussion. It had somehow lost most of its top end. And the hihat got lost in the mix, too. I've fixed those problems. In trance music in general, the kick drum is the loudest thing in the mix, and the bass can be kind of overwhelming, too. Trance...

Listen to the Rhythm (Trance 2.0)

My latest track, a progressive trance number called Listen to the Rhythm. I like those fairly quiet breakdowns in regular trance but wanted to get a full, lush, melodic breakdown in this one. What do you think? https://soundcloud.com/garryknight/listen-to-the-rhythm

    TV: The Sound of Song

If you're in the UK, or have access to BBC4 or BBC iPlayer, you might like to know about a series starting this Friday (16th) called The Sound of Song. Composer and musician Neil Brand talks in depth about composing and recording, and deconstructs songs from recent history. I have no...

late 60s sounds in soft synths, samplers, etc - recommendations

Seconded. The Komplete Elements package is fantastic value for the price, especially as it includes Reaktor Player for synts, Guitar Rig Player for amps, cabinets, and effects, and Kontact Player for sampled instruments including Abbey Road 60s Drummer. Plus you get a £22 (or local equivalent)...
