    Taming Cymbals

some ideas - - experiment with mic placement.....maybe you need to back off your overheads a bit from the cymbals or possibly you could be driving the gain too much on the preamp - try sticking some pieces of electrical tape on the underside of the cymbal - this can control the overtones a bit...

    Firsetation vs. 828mkII ????

I've been looking at getting one of these 2 interfaces and was pretty much decided on the 828 - for the sole reason of 10 inputs vs. 8 for the firestation (firestation's preamp'd inputs take the place of 2 of the 8 ins if they are used; 828's preamp'd inputs can be used in addition to the 8ins)...

maybe ludwig had some sort of deal with academic music programs back in the day...! kinda makes sense since ludwig produces alot of marching band stuff.....

Got my new drums last night!

could have had something to do with the kit (in my junior high) being either in a.) the audiotorium or b.) the band room (that had linoleum floors and very little 'dampening' material (other than the band director's hair piece):D

real drums played like crap still better than a machine on my tracks

Re: Re: Re: I disagree that's cool, I understand I agree with that - but you saidy 'hardly or not at all distinguishable'.... anyway, sounds good, nice programming. where did you get the drum sounds??? the splashes are particularly nice.

Got my new drums last night!

NICE........are those actual 'vintage' or the new reissue? glad to hear you got them sounding good...I've only been exposed to vistalites once - my junior high had a set for the concer/jazz band (interesting choice, right?) and they always sounded ok - but really loud.

real drums played like crap still better than a machine on my tracks

Re: I disagree hmmmmm, while your programming is nice and the drums sound ok, I would never mistake them for real drums. I always find it interesting when someone goes through the trouble of recording a cover song, verbatim. sounds good - but I'd rather listen to the original AinC version...

best way to mic a snare?

Re: Mic position wow, somebody actually pays attention to what I write! makes me feel warm and fuzzy. anyway - neil peart did have a pzm mic taped to his shirt during the recording of moving pictures in order to pick up some snare. but I believe that he also had your more standard snare...

I've heard some good feedback on use of the Presonus Bluemax compressor on kick....unfortunately haven't used it myself but a friend w/a project studio uses one and likes

What do I need to make remixes of songs?

well.....you need access to the original tapes/tracks. in other words...you can't do it. unless, of course, you're remixing your own stuff.

How do you haul your hardware?

I'm another of the duffle bag guys. I have one of these: http://www.eaglecreek.com/20014.html I manage to fit inside this bag (all stands double braced): throne base, snare stand, hi hat stand, double tom stand, single boom, single straight, tom holder w/extension arm (for splash), another...

    Need advice from experienced people

though not super-cheap....I can recommend the Iron Cobra double pedal...it feels great, it's adjustable as heck..I like it alot better than the DW5000 double - it just feels more responsive, more 'controllable. not sure about the cheaper double pedals... you could probably pick up a used iron...

Anybody heard of the ZIDJIAN MIC PACK?

If I remember correctly, the zildjian microphone 'system' was produced about 10-15 years ago and never caught on. They were discontinued probably around the early 90's. I have no idea how good they sound.... I have my doubts about a cymbal company producing microphones. Can you test them out...

Song creation in Fruity Loops - referencing patterns?

    - go to the pattern that you want to copy, hit 'select all' (I believe it's in the edit menu) - then 'copy' the selection (again, in the edit menu) - go to the next unused pattern and 'paste' this should do it!!:D

    Best Recorded Snare Ever

you've made me think about this and remember that Peart's snare sound on the Moving Pictures record is one of my favorites as well. I believe that they had a PZM mic taped to the front of Neil's shirt for the recording of that record in addition to whatever close mic'ing they were using.

    Best Recorded Snare Ever

minor correction here...Vinnie Colaiuta actually plays the kit on Joe's Garage. one of my favorite snare sounds has got to be Bruford's on the records 'Feels Good to Me' and 'One of a Kind' - 'Hell's Bells' and 'Beelzebub' in particular

    behringer mixers

not sure I agree with this...as there are plenty of people here who have 'studio quality equipment' in their home recording studios. maybe not a neve console or a great river preamp...but still 'studio quality.' Anyways, WTF is 'studio quality' anyway? I know of plenty of 'pro' bands that...
