    Yamaha p90

I can't speak for the quality of the P90, but I'm pretty sure the P80 has more piano sounds.

You may well be right there.

What Key Am I Playing In????

Yes, you're right there about "learn the rules so you can forget them" - but I think you nailed it when you said that you can't recommend not learning the theory altogether. You need to know it, so that you can forget it. You need to get to the stage that you don't have to think about it. So...

Why does Doubling sound so much better than cloning/copying?

Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. I didn't need to say that at the start of the post.

What Key Am I Playing In????

I've gotta say, I'm amazed by the fact of competent musicians not knowing what key they're in... Anyway, writing a computer program to figure out what key you're playing is no mean feat, I reckon. You could write one that would do a pretty reasonable job (it wouldn't be a small task though, I...

Why does Doubling sound so much better than cloning/copying?

Well it's all very well just quoting that part of the post...

Why does Doubling sound so much better than cloning/copying?

I would have thought it's pretty obvious. You can't perform it exactly the same way twice - and it's the little changes that make it sound interesting.

Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

    How do you figure?

    Headphone monitoring

5 heads? :D I've got a pair of those. They don't sound so nice. They do, however, have the virtue of having extremely good noise attenuation. I can record close-miced vocals with them, and get no leakage at all! So that's pretty much all I use 'em for. If I'm not using a mic, I use better...

    Name that chord

If you have a bass player - just tell him to play a C instead of an F#, and you play the same chord :D Seriously though, the notes of Cdim7 are C Eb F# A (look familiar?) - I'm sure you can work out your own voicing - it's really not difficult.

    Name that chord

Yup, Skysaw is right on the money. F#dim7, Adim7, Cdim7, and Ebdim7 all contain the same notes. It's simply the bass note that defines which one of those it is you're playing. A common dim7 shape is on the top 4 strings, as Skysaw said - you can get that exact F#dim7 voicing as follows: E...

    I love it loud

If it's Nu-Metal, just shoot yourself in the head, and save everyone some hassle :D Seriously though, I don't like way they squash the living crap out of modern pop music - and what the radio stations to do it just makes it worse. I really do think that you can get the music as loud as is...

Blue Bear, lets talk eq, and added noise......

Indeed. Though - and forgive my naivity - for example, vocals. A vocal track making through to the final mix, without any EQ having been applied to it... does that actually happen?? Even with the most carefully placed mics in the world? I'm thinking of close mic'ed lead vocal here, for a pop...

    I love it loud

I guess that's the thing, isn't it? You need an objective view, however good you are at mastering other people's material. This is one of the many reasons I'm glad my Dad is a professional audio engineer :)

Blue Bear, lets talk eq, and added noise......

...Interesting. I didn't realise boosting affected phase relationships more than cutting. So, say you want more treble on your vocal track. Starting with a flat EQ curve, and taking out some middle - and upping the level, *isn't* the same as just boosting the treble & bass? So, starting with...

    I love it loud

I hear you on that one. I'd be interested to know, though - what your views are on classical vs "pop" (I mean pop in the general sense of popular music - not as in Britney et al) - as far as mastering goes. Do you think that pop requires more attention to detail, or more trained/experienced...

    Yamaha p90

I've got a P80 and I love it. Great feel, great piano sound. The sustain pedal thing on the P90 looks interesting though. However, given my financial situation there's no way I'm gonna be forking out for a P90 any time in the forseeable future. I'm way too happy with the P80 to consider that...

    No rules. Just theory.
