As for "lots of people" liking them, I honestly don't think I had ever run across a person who liked them until I came here. Obviously, a lot of people here seem to like them.
But, I'm still trying to figure out if we're talking about 2 different things. The ones I've tried are brutal. You...
Huh?
Glad you like it. The platinum range stuff I've tried sounded rather shitty. Either they've recently upgraded the pre's in these things (nobody seems to know whether they have), or our tastes are quite different.
To be fair, you're comparing the proverbial "apples and oranges". Your example of how the Focusrite is much better than the RNP on MIDI drums doesn't even involve using the RNP (i.e. the Really Nice Mic Pre) as a mic pre. It's kind of like saying the Lexicon MPX100 is a much better unit than...
I havn't tried the '27 or the '44, but I own a '32 and really like it. It doesn't seem to get a lot of press or hype, but it's a really solid performer; fairly neutral and good on a lot of things.
If you're OK with B-Stock and blemished units, most of the online retailers seem to have them up the yin-yang for fairly cheap. Try the usual suspects (8th Street, American Musical, Musician's Friend, Sweetwater, etc.).
Your loss. I'm sure Fletcher's sometimes-extreme personality loses him some customers, but I'll bet it gains him more than he loses. Sure the Hitler thing is pretty over-the-top, but how many retailers would have the guts to: (1) voluntarily drop Neumann from their product line, and (2)...
I'm not talking about reading ozraves' reviews; I'm talking about listening to ozraves' clips. The VTB-1 sounded like ass, tube on or tube off. The Audiobuddy sounded pretty good. And, no, ozraves never said that the DI sounded similar to any M-Audio product. He said that it doesn't excel as...
I havn't read any of the magazine reviews, but I tried a couple of units out a couple of years ago and wasn't the least bit impressed. Unlike the Red and Blue series, everyone I've ever spoken to about the Platinum series generally had a similar impression (I've often heard the "Voicemaster"...
Lovin' it.
Echo Layla, as well as the converters in my Tascam and Marantz CD players/recorders.
Ooh. That's tough to do without sounding like an advertisement or some cheezeball review. I'd use words like "tighter", "clearer", "more solid", "deeper", "more detailed". Not much help, I...
I just had a second look at my mic list that I posted to another thread. Of the 20 mic's I personally own, I consider myself to have paid a "fair price" for 6 of them and to have gotten a "killer deal" on 14 of them. You can definately save a lot of cash if you're patient and keep your eyes open.
OK, I ignored this thread until now, but here goes. These are what I personally own:
(1) Beyerdynamic M-88TG
(2) Beyerdynamic M201
(1) EV 635A
(1) GT AM40
(1) Royer R121
(1) Sennheiser 441
(2) Sennheiser 421
(1) Shure KSM-32
(3) Shure SM-57
(1) Shure SM-58
(1) Sony C-37P
(1) Soundelux U195
(4)...
That's typical of UPS. Definately shop around to find a retailer that'll use regular post (or anything other than UPS). Some only use UPS, so you have to be careful.
That's what you get for living in B.C. instead of Alberta. :)
