    Should I sell my NT2?

What are your pre options? I find the NT2 pretty sensitive to what its being run through. It does well with darker pres. I think its unique sounding, 12k boost aside.

    delta 1010

Parting tis such sweet sorrow. Ive upgraded to mytek and EMU and so its time to bid my beloved 1010 farewell. For those who have been living under a rock these past 3-4 years, the delta 1010 is the most stable 10 in 10 out card on the planet. I cant think of one piece of software it did not...

What sampling rate do you use?

Older plugins like waves 3.x for instance sound a teensy weensy bit better at 88.2/96. Maybe. Which has something to do with digital filtering. With most newer plugs like UAD-1 for instance, this does not seem to be an issue. The whole sample rate quality issue has ALOT more to do with the...

NTK + (insert mic pre here!) = good listenin'

Ive had OSA pres and I have to say they sound distnctly bad on vox. Great in guitars, beautiful on drums, very fine on bass but awful on vox. Theres this midrange hardness to all their pres thats extremely nonmusical and that doesnt go away with EQ. This was with otherwise scooped LDC's. If I...

    Mindprint DIport

Dual pre/AD converter. Really nice sounding unit. Great alternative to the DMP3. It has a more of a sheeny sound, very open top and a bit more muscular all around. Its a great front end with various routing options including an option to mix the analog and digital outs to taste. Its yours $200...

Screw around with the buffer sizes and no. of buffers. You should have more than enough power there to do basic recording.

two C1's for OH? or can i get better with same $

The C1s are too hyped in the wrong places to effectively work as OHs. Too much around and below 100Hz. Too much bet 4k-7k and not around 2k. The scoop they have is meant for vocals, not drums and they sound very unnatural on drums. They dont have the superfast response and nice decay on...

studio projects c1 vs. Baby Blue Bottle

I dont know about that. I dont think things are so linear in terms of price/quality. My ME-1NV does not trounce my RNP. They are both great and offer dif colors of very nice. I think if youre paying attention to your mics, paying real close attention to what they do, over time, over several...

studio projects c1 vs. Baby Blue Bottle

Now heres the thing. I didnt say crappy, I said good. A handful of good mics is better than 1 great mic. I dont mean to mitigate the value of a great mic. There is a definite dif bet good and great. I think alot of what great mics do is give you a certain sound which you find on alot of...

studio projects c1 vs. Baby Blue Bottle

I cant recall using the same vocal mic on 2 consecutive projects. All the talk of more $ = better mic misses the point. Youre better off with a few smartly picked $2-600 mics than 1 soundeluxe or 1 gefell. Diversity will serve you better over several projects than one great mic. Once youve got a...

good compressor at a decent price?

Id say the clear bang for the buck in comps nowadays would be a UAD-1 card. Aside from the 1176 and LA2A, UA is coming out with their fairchild version in a month or so. There is currently not a compressor out now in that price range, hardware or software, that will give you the snap on kick or...

Man this metal rhythm sounds GREAT !!!

People do like to be smartasses. I included. BUT, there is a major lack of definition and EQ in that mix. I am a big fan of gothneburg bands like in flames, soilwork, meshuggah, etc and the ethos of the day for that genre is HUGE on bottom and defined and very compressed, as in completely...

    "Who am I?" New joint....

The bongo fill gets tired fast. Maybe vary it, make it more dynamic, less aggressive, it sounds like an arranger keyboard fill. Theyre gratuitous. The chorus vocal establishes a feel and groove and the bongos interrupt that. I would also vary that background synth wail sound. The bottom line is...

    "Who am I?" New joint....

Yeah. Theres some real nice warmth going on in the vocals, but it needs a bit more on top. I would lose that bongo fill that keeps coming up. It totally kills the song. Whats your vocal chain?

Man this metal rhythm sounds GREAT !!!

Mixing Tip No. 1-6031: Everything must have its own space. Figure out what frequencies are absolutely necessary for each instrument and cut whats not needed. The Kick for instance, does not do much between 180-2k or so. Cut it out and compress the rest. Theres a page floating around somewhere...
