The drum recording you hate the most

worst...well sadly listening back to parts of Melon Collie & the Infinite Sadness and Siamese Dream....some of the drums a mixed very thin, and pushed waaaay back in the mix...sounding rather midi...which is a shame because jimmy is an excellent drummer... Best, I always really liked the drums...

    mixing down from tascam 688

Are you saying you want to take the 8 tracks from your tascam, sync them up on the computer and mix on your computer? Dudeman, why not just mix on the tascam itself..? I love the 688 mixer section...you have actual knobs to touch and love and caress, rather than menus, mouse clicks, and eye...

All this talk about samples and triggering is really starting to bother me.

and if you want your music to sound "plastic-perfect" go right ahead, i'm just warning you that you're dating yourself, and it will end up sounding totally cliche... and don't spend so much time trying to get that perfect sound that you forget to write good songs. good songs will shine through...

"Live band that doesnt play..." poll

Bands that play with backing tracks piss me off. I don't care if the music doesn't sound just like the cd, i want to see an impassioned performance...i want to see you put your fuckin heart into it, and make me beleive that you beleive what your playing/saying. fuck that little keyboard...

Mixing in that powerful kick and snare without clipping

oh i'm well aware of that, and didn't mean any disrespect at all...actually that's why i used him, because i'm sure he could keep a beat...but he would never have that powerful in your face delivery...on drums anyway...i think if you want that sound you just need the right person...

All this talk about samples and triggering is really starting to bother me.

But you're missing out on half the fun. Don't you enjoy the challenge of trying to make good recordings from junk...? or the sense that you're doing things or micing things in your own way, rather than using some samples so that your drums sound more "professional" just like everyone elses...

Mixing in that powerful kick and snare without clipping

perhaps the issue is the drumming. you have to hit hard with a quick attack if you want that really punchy in your face drum sound...you couldn't record like, Mr Rogers playing drums and expect it to sound like Tommy Lee...no matter how good a beat Mr Rogers could've kept...

    need help recording guitar!!

recording in a small enclosed space may make the recording sound boxy.... i just reccomend getting the mic as close to the speaker as possible, make sure the amp isn't on the floor, and reduce the gain a bit because it will usually sound more distorted "on-tape" (ok i'm old school i still use...

    need help recording guitar!!

how far away do you have your mic? if it's too far away you may be picking up unwanted room ambience...you should have the mic right up o the speaker...

All this talk about samples and triggering is really starting to bother me.

Hell yeah muthafucka! i hate all this trigger-happy hippie sample bullshit. Whatever happened to the enjoyment of the imperfections in music? You know...the things that make it human....That's right..lets just all sell our souls to satan because it's easier, and hey, i can't tell the difference...

    What's The Right Recording Level

i don't understand why people type all in caps... are you a leo, do you need the attention or something? then again i like to type all small, and put dot dot dots all over the place for no reason at all...sooo, yeah...

A nice clicky/fat bass drum sound..

try pulling out the low mids when mixing. I do a lot of metal, not as heavy as as i lay dying, but that usually works for me to bring out the clickiness more...

    Sm57 On Kick Drum

there is no right or wrong mic for any job. you can get a decent sound out the most horrible peice of shit gear, if you know how to use it. I record my kick with an old speaker inside the kick. I record my snare with a fuckin $2 mic from value village, and i use a shure as on overhead. that is...

    Incubus Make Yourself Question

Hey, that's Swollen Pickle by WayHuge Electronics...thats a wicked pedal. Nine Inch Nails also uses this pedal...and me, if i could ever find one...damn bastards with your frickin "collector items"... Mike's also a fan of the DOD Gonkulator/Modulator...just try finding one of those...and if you...

    I have a confession . . .

whoa...imagine continuously panning everything around in the mix so it's swirly and stuff...crazy. That would be a good idea for someone like tool to steal...er, appropriate...i would try it if i had automated panning...

    I have a confession . . .

Everyone knows that drums should be panned from the drummers perspective....even if you're not a drummer, what about all the poor air-drummers...do you really want to force them to do their fills backwards!? i really like some of tool's drum panning...with the snare not in the stereotypical...

    Post your favorite production tricks!

on Lateralis i beleive you can hear this effect when parabol kicks into to parabola, also used by Ozzy on the song perry mason, and using a delay on hurt by nin when it goes into the chorus...i can't think of any more examples right now... my favourite studio trick is chemical indulgence..heh...

    balancing my lines

lol I thought balanced lines meant you do one up each nostril for even dispersment of drugs to both sides of your brain ;) what kind of studio are you running over there...?

    Autotune or not?

I think the reason auto-tune is so indispensable is because being a pop star has more to do with looks than actual singing ability Auto-tune is just another tool to add to the plasticity of music...the more I hear where music is going today, the more I start to agree with the Steve Albini...
