What is the MOST important thing to record a decent demo?

I would definitely choose technical know-how and good musicianship/songwriting/performance over good gear. We had a friend who does a lot of recording that gets horrible drum sounds from his studio that was bragging about upgrading his soundcard. And we were joking, "Great! Now your drums can...

When you turn down the volume.....

Awwww...... c'mon...... boosting between 20-40hz about 12 db can do wonders for a mix!!!! :D

When you turn down the volume.....

Oh, and Looney.... I already practice the "carve out" method regularly. There's a nice little hole for the hit of the snare drum to poke through and sound nice.... it just doesn't sound nice even when soloed if it's at a low volume. :)

When you turn down the volume.....

Hey, thanks guys..... after posting this, it suddenly ocurred to me..... I can't believe I had forgotten about the old Fletcher Munson.... I was actually copying a picture of the graph when I checked this messageboard again. Then what you guys said pretty much confirmed what I had been...

When you turn down the volume.....

After all I've learned about mixing, there's still this one thing that bothers me, and I don't think that I get it. In a nutshell, what the hell happens to a sound when you turn down the volume, and what can you do to something to make it sound at a lower volume like it does at a higher volume...

How can i make my guitar tracks sound like powerfull distortion with a cd quality???

Thanks! Hey, thanks a lot Chessrock.... hang on a bit, we're recording a full length right now that's going to rule... we're re-recording all those songs, so for fun you can download those right now then later compare them the old recordings to the new to see how far I've come in learning to...

How can i make my guitar tracks sound like powerfull distortion with a cd quality???

I have your answer. Wait, I just saw that part. This is my cup of tea... I've gotten some serious mileage out of my POD going for this type of sound. Listen to Scrotal Torment, Stupid Ifs on http://www.mp3.com/psychostick Here's how I got it: First, find the the "Line 6 Insane" setting. Use...

How can i make my guitar tracks sound like powerfull distortion with a cd quality???

Yeah, if you use a POD, it puts out a LOT of low end. You'll definitely want to do some serious low end-cutting after getting it to tape. I usually just do a rolloff.

    Chino's vocals (from the Deftones)

Yeah..... yeah, that really does. Every little breathe he takes is so crisply detailed.... it would make sense that you use compression to bring up those very quite subtleties. It also sounds like in addition to what you are saying, didn't they also give him some delay?

    Distortion Guitar Sounds Like Shite

In that case... what Hard2Hear said :) Another thing you might try is rolling off some of the hi-end that you can get when micing a cab, like everything about 6-7khz and up. I find doing this can reduce some of the buzzy, "gritty" quality I personally can't stand.

    Chino's vocals (from the Deftones)

Has anyone ever heard the effect they often use on Chino from the Deftone's vocals? Specifically on "Change In the House Of Flies". It sounds like there's some distortion or something, and the sibilants sound so damn cool and pronounced... it's as if the "s" sound was lowered down into the...

    Distortion Guitar Sounds Like Shite

Hey poo.... what kind of distorted sound are you going for? Name a few artists..... are you looking for rock distortion, or metal distortion? For example, Hard2Hear defines as "big distortion" as like Green Day. I would consider powerful sounding distortion to be Pantera/Fear Factory/Deftones...

Putting in new pickup.... hold me....

SUCCESS!!!! It works, love the new pickup. Me and my bud with the soldering iron were able to get it together with the help of Bighand's link.... though I must apologize that I hadn't checked these forums since Bighand's reply, but I'll still take your "after the fact advise" from now on...

Putting in new pickup.... hold me....

Hey, I just got a new Seymour Duncan humbucker pickup that I'm going to be putting into the bridge of my dual-humbucker axe.... never done this before, but I think I can do it.... I know someone who has a saudering iron, but does anyone have any tips for me? Or better yet, a website dealing...

    Getting people to come back.

    1. Usually between 5-7 bucks. 2. Usually Fridays/Saturdays. We try to avoid weekday shows, unless it's during spring break or during the summer when kids are out of school (we appeal to high schoolers/college kids the most, important fact I should have added). 3. We vary our playlist from show...

    Getting people to come back.

So, this describes our band: our shows keep getting better and better, everyshow we play never fails to bring the house down... I can't tell you how many autographs I've signed on cds... most people agree that we have something very original and distinct going about us... we're the kind of band...

Mixing Metal Guitarz, or Wide As Hell

Yep, and there's always that. Ahhhhh..... Line 6 Insane.....

Mixing Metal Guitarz, or Wide As Hell

I sometimes do a low pass at around 5khz..... the super hi-end seems to be the culprit for the "grit". I also had success do a little tiny scoop at 2-2.5 khz..... that area can really wear away your ears, and covers up vocals, the kick's "click", and the attack of the bass guitar.

    Live Mixing / PA Setup?

Wow, I actually understood everything you said!!! (I'm gonna be running sound for my first gig here in a couple weeks, too). If the stage is even somewhat big, I wouldn't do ANY panning... like, if someone's on the right side of the stage, all their going to be hearing is what's coming out of...

Using fundamental frequency as rolloff point

Hey Ed, I've seen it a ton of times, but do you know a link to a graph of the Fletcher/Munson curve so I can print it out and study it more clearly?
