    How to spend money...

You may be right regarding his ability to multi-pass the recording. However, I challenge the $1K per channel to achieve pro results, including mic, preamps, and conversion. Pro conversion is at least $275/channel, pro preamps (sorry, I like RNP, but they're not quite pro) are $800 and up, and...

can somebody help me a little?

Unless someone with a really, really nice drum set, tuned really well, nicely played in a really nice room with really nice mics into really nice preamps into a really nice A/D convertered, monitored on really nice monitors, feels charitable to do this for you, there's little chance you'll get...

Guitar Preamp used for Vocal Preamp?..

Possible? Yes Desireable? Highly Doubtful, but certainly worth trying.

    How to spend money...

Assuming you want to record all the instruments playing live together (as opposed to layering, which is more of a pop approach), then you'll either: 1) Have to record in a wonderful room with an extremely meticulously placed pair of nice mics and preamps. This will be very difficult to achieve...

    Drum overhead recording question

And you've tried switching to a known good channel, using a known good cable? (I've had cables which drop the phantom lead. They work fine on dynamics, but not for phantom powered condensors/ribbons)/

    Recording Soft (Whispered) Vocals

I second Ray's points. And I'd like to amplify the don't-sing-directly-into-the-mic rule. It's important in normal sung vocals, quadruply so w whispers. I also think it sounds great to get very close to the mic (which makes not singing directly into it all the more challenging) and you'll need...

    How's This Song?

Thanks so much for all the feedback! I've made a number of tweaks to http://www.toddejones.com/songs/KillingMe.mp3 based on feedback from this, and other forums (forae?) Intro is shorter Doubled vocals pulled way back in mix Put a final "yourself" to it. Does this help enhancercize this tune?

    How's This Song?

Thanks for the detailed feedback, MMM. I will review each of those items on remix.

    How's This Song?

Thanks, Ciro! Is your opening line parenthetical a minus sign (indicating vocals are not excellent) or a dash (indicating instruments through vocals are excellent)? I can take it either way.

    How's This Song?

Warning, this song is highly depressing, or at least aspires to be: http://www.toddejones.com/songs/KillingMe.mp3 It is slow to develop, but I wanted that, to gradually set the mood. I know the vocals have to be top notch for this song to succeed, so I'm still sweating them here and there...

    Drum overhead recording question

Sure, a preamp on a prosumer console vs. a quasi-boutique dedicated preamp? Headroom is everything, and it costs money.

Questions about Bass Traps and Packing Blankets

\ If you have the space, you can stack rolls of regular old fiberglass insulation (don't unpack them from the roll) in corners for very effective, albeit slap-dash looking, bass traps.

I am about to pull the trigger on a basement studio build

Use the basement if you have no alternatives. I did and had a series of nightmarish problems. 1) HVAC ductwork typically runs through basement ceilings. These do a great job of transmitting sound throughout the house. You bug others, they bug you. 2) Water, basements, nuff said 3) Ceiling...

Questions about Bass Traps and Packing Blankets

Yes, I bought this from North Brothers, in Raleigh, NC. The key is that nearly all suppliers of OC703 deal with large industrial construction firms (acoustic attenuation is not the intended purpose of this product). They're set up to deliver literally hundreds of cases to a job site (it's...

    Electric Vs. Acoustic drums.

Generally speaking real drums, unless I want a drum machiney sound in which case I'll program drums. I would never use electronic drums though, as that just seems like the worst of both worlds. Your Mileage May Vary.

Questions about Bass Traps and Packing Blankets

A few thicknesses of moving blankets, while not equivalent to OC703 or Rockwool, will help attenuate highs and perhaps some mids. You'll do well to suspend them a few inches off the wall. Bass traps are traditionally put in corners first, but again, you'll need a lot of layers of moving...

    Please Comment on "Spinning"

Thanks guys! Beastie Boys? Well, I like them okay, but never actively seek them out, nor am I familiar with the tune referenced on Ill Comm. Fourthward, yeah, I've been pulling the drums back in the mix a bit, although I boost them in the section you noted, since I wanted to highlight the...

    Avalon 737 Phase Invert

For a single mic, the phase switch should produce no discernable difference. Sounds like the Avalon phase does something more than just flip phase. For grins, I'd record it both ways, then flip phase in Sonar itself.

    Please Comment on "Spinning"

Here's my mix for a new tune, called Spinning: www.toddejones.com/songs/Spinning.mp3 I think it needs more work, but I'm too close to it right now to be objective. I welcome your input, from fawning praise to eviscerating criticism. Thanks, -Zilla

    Mic Preamp and Drum Recordings

If you like it, that's what counts. Just make sure not to listen to Neve, API, Millenia, John Hardy or Pacifica preamps.
