Need help with vocal mic selection

I'd get one nice LDC for the lead and use the sm58's for backups then. IMHO that would be a better investment overall.

    True pecision 8

Sytek mpx-4a, around $800 for four channels. It doesn't have much "personality" either, but it's very clean and smooth, and it will kick the living crap out of your mackies. Don't be fooled by the price, it's a very high quality unit. A good choice for anyone's first high quality pre. A lot of...

    Difference between AT4040 and AT4050

I've never had a chance to AB them, but I did a bit of research on the same question a while back and most people seem to say that they sound very similar in cardioid mode, but the 4040 is a little brighter and has a less "hard" top end. A few people also felt that the 4050 is a little more...

    Best mics for under $200/

Need help with vocal mic selection

I would not recommend recording vocals live with condesor mics unless you're puting the players in different rooms and having them monitor with headphones. If you want to do a live recording with the whole band in the same room, you will get much less bleed and hence, more usable tracks with...

    Studio Projects New Marketing Strategy...

Maybe it is better off in the cave. The topic of the post is a microphone manufacturer, so I figured I'd post it here. I knew this thread would offend people, but it was just too damn funny to resist. Have a sense of humor people!

    Studio Projects New Marketing Strategy...

Alan really knows how to market his microphones! Now that's what I call product placement! http://www.facialbuffets.com/pictures/erotic/kylashyla/lliba.html Warning: Link contains images that may be offensive to some viewers. View at your own risk.

    Recording Drums

Nah, two oktava mc012's for overheads = $200 one sm57 or 58 for snare = you already have atm25 for kick = $160 Miking the toms are optional. So for $360 bucks you would have a decent setup IMHO. Just remember that you need four decent pres to run these mics through. A cheap mixer will work...

    Real drums louder?

Yup, and they were probably recorded through soething like API pre's too, which are famous for their huge drum sound, and I bet they were eq'd to perfection got some nice tape saturation from a studer, and were played by a drummer that knows how to hit drums so that they thwack like they were...

    Timing Issues

I just finished listening to the 3 songs and I agree here. The drummer is a little sloppy, but it doesn't seem to be totally his fault. It's hard to tell from just the recordings, but I really do get the sense that this is more of an issue with the entire band than it is with just the drummer. I...

    struggling with bass drum

coated heads give the drum a more mellow tone. Try a clear 2 ply head for a sharper attack. Wood and ruber beaters, and also those dots with the metal in them that are made to give the bass drum that clicky metal sound.

can someone post a clip of a good bass sound?

20-80hz... Unless you have REALLY good monitors, don't boost or you'll find yourself in trouble. High pass around 40-50hz if there is too much rumble. 80-150hz... This is the body of your bass tracks, changes here can really screw your bass tracks, be careful here. I usually find myself...

Good Microphone for Handling Metal Vocals

Two different mics. Similar flavor, but the sm-7 is a beast of a mic compared to a 57.

can someone post a clip of a good bass sound?

Unless you are going for an unusually live and roomy sound, I would stay very far away from reverb on bass tracks. If you really need some more verb in your bass tracks, I'd mic a bass amp to get some room into it. Christiaan is right, good bass tracks for the mix usually sound like ass...

    recording in closet

The problem is hardly ever a mic/preamp issue... Though if you feel the need to upgrade, I'd ditch the ART. The 609 and b1 are more than adequate for getting great guitar sounds.

    what preamp?

...And how many other companies are honest and straightforward enough to admit where their product falls short? Any mic pre in the below $1000 category is making compromises somewhere. FMR audio is just honest about it because they think they have a great product and don't want to push any...

    feedback ... drums

I LOVE that drum micing technique! It works every time. The recording sounds pretty good. I'd definitely try re-tuning the bass drum. I'd also add some high end to the whole mix. The room you recorded the drums in must be REALLY dead, because there is almost no reverb or sparkle to the cymbals...
