    Difference between mixing and mastering

    This is dumb.

    How is THIS done?

I've heard of this before, but never really fully understood how it works. I think what they do is they take like a styrofoam manican(sp?) head and they drill holes at ear level and then stick little (I'm assuming) condenser mics inside the head facing outward then they record the sound going...

    Thanks to both of you!

recording my bands demo ... lookin for some input before its finalized

Alright, I listened to the streamed version at first while it was downloading and it sounded like ass. The downloaded version sounded ALOT better. Purevolume sucks. Myspace's streaming sounds a little better. Snare drum is kind of annoying, needs a little depth to it, kind of sounds like...

    Some "Massive" Mastering Questions

I'm going to add to the questions. This may be a silly question to some, but I've never gotten anything mastered so I was wondering when you send it off to get it mastered, you're sending a stereo track for each song, correct? You want to send the final mixdown, not seperated drum, guitar...

    Overhead reccomendations

I want to spend about $500 on a pair of decent overheads. I want something that will capture lots of highs and doesn't really need to catch a ton of lows. The ability to capture really smooth high end is a must. Any suggestions?

    AKG perception 200

I'll tell you how I set up everything for that recording. 2 MXL 991's left and right overhead. AKG Perception 200 over the middle of the kit but down pretty low to pick up snare and toms(it ended up picking up more cymbals then it usually does when I use this technique, either I didn't have it...

    AKG perception 200

I own the Perception 200. I love it. Awesome microphone and very affordable. Here's a mix I'm working on for a band. I used this mic as a middle overhead to capture the snare, I used it on the guitar with it switched to the bass rolloff setting and the pad on, and used it for vocals...

    Does anyone know?

Does anyone know any good mastering engineers who will master like a 30 second sample of your music for free. I'm really curious to hear what even a small sample of one of my mixes would sound like if it were mastered like the hundreds of recordings that are mastered that I compare my...

    I need your opinions...

Thanks for the comments. Originally I had the keys even louder and I realized how that mid range frequency is kind of hard on the ears, I may try to cut a certain frequency out of that keyboard but at the same time I'm thinking that frequency kind of gives it that dreamy vibe and I don't want...

    I need your opinions...

...and constructive criticism. This is a band I recently recording, this is the second mix I've done of the song(I usually do about 5 or 6 mixes before I'm satisfied with the outcome.) If you guys could just take a listen to the song and give some feedback, positive or negative, but it has to...

    Building Kick Drum Tunnel

Any ideas on making one of these? Does a company make them or is this a DIY kind of thing?

    blanket over the kickdrum

I too, use a blanket to isolate the kick drum.

    Condenser Mic on Kick Drum

I'm not thinking of actually putting the mic inside of the kick drum, but more like 5-6 inches outside of the kick drum, and maybe putting a blanket or something over the kick drum and the mic to isolate the rest of the drums a little bit. I have a pop filter so I would probably put that on as...

    Condenser Mic on Kick Drum

Bad idea or is it commonly used? Seems kind of risky with all the air that the kick drum puts out, but I've done it in the past and it sounded really good and clear. What precautions should I take when doing this?

    Professional Sounding Vocals?

You need a decent condenser mic, a pop filter, and some kind of compressor, and maybe a touch of reverb depending on what sound you are going for. I get pretty professional sounding vocals using an AKG Perception 200 condenser mic, a pop filter, and whatever compressor plugins I have in Cubase.

    Drum Recording Manipulations

I've never personally tried to bring out certain drum sounds from a single channel drum track but you might try boosting a little bit around 80-100 Hz to get the kick up a little bit more, Maybe try boosting around 5 kHz to bring out the snare a little bit. This may help. If anyone else has...

    Metronome

Thanks guys. So does anyone know why they have a "metronome" and a "tempo track" what does one do that the other doesn't do?

Does this technique have a name

Yesterday I recorded someone and I decided to not close mic, and to just try like a 4 mic technique so I used a beta52 on the kick, two mxl 991's left and right overheads pretty high up, and an akg perception 200 hovering over the middle of the drum set. It turned out to be a really good drum...
