I want to spend about $500 on a pair of decent overheads. I want something that will capture lots of highs and doesn't really need to catch a ton of lows. The ability to capture really smooth high end is a must. Any suggestions?

I too, use a blanket to isolate the kick drum.

I'm not thinking of actually putting the mic inside of the kick drum, but more like 5-6 inches outside of the kick drum, and maybe putting a blanket or something over the kick drum and the mic to isolate the rest of the drums a little bit. I have a pop filter so I would probably put that on as...

Bad idea or is it commonly used? Seems kind of risky with all the air that the kick drum puts out, but I've done it in the past and it sounded really good and clear. What precautions should I take when doing this?

You need a decent condenser mic, a pop filter, and some kind of compressor, and maybe a touch of reverb depending on what sound you are going for. I get pretty professional sounding vocals using an AKG Perception 200 condenser mic, a pop filter, and whatever compressor plugins I have in Cubase.

I've never personally tried to bring out certain drum sounds from a single channel drum track but you might try boosting a little bit around 80-100 Hz to get the kick up a little bit more, Maybe try boosting around 5 kHz to bring out the snare a little bit. This may help. If anyone else has...
