    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

We seem to have a difference of opinion here! or I've been on the Listening Sessions, and the pres do seem to make a significant difference. The VTB1 sounds worse than, say, the Great Rivers. I don't think that the cheap mics through expensive pres sound better than the expensive mics through...

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

I'm most likely going to be recording the vocals in a living room-type of situation, although I may also try them dry with blankets, etc. Oh, and I should mention, the more money I have to spend on rental gear, the less I can spend on booze for the session (I find that that is actually the...

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

Thanks for the replies. I am glad that we are taking a practical approach as a opposed to a theoretical one. I am currently using a SP B1, MXL 990 or a SM57. Out of these, the 57 sounds the best on my voice-- I can eq it with OK results. The vtb1 and delta 1010 are, indeed, not horrendous...

    Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

My band just returned from a day at a great studio tracking instruments (live off the floor) for a demo. Now we're going to be overdubbing stuff in my humble home studio. The most imortant set of overdubs is, of course, vocals. I have cheapo gear including a studio projects vtb1 preamp and a...

    The BEST EVER Live Recording

Forget "live album", Live at Leeds is one of my favourite albums PERIOD. It is far and away the Who's best albums. Neil Young's Time Fades Away is also a great live album. But then again, he took a "live" approach to studio recordings (as opposed to artists discussed above who took a "studio"...

    Low-Fi Folk-Rock

Hey, I'm glad everyone liked it, or was intrigued at least. I was thinking that the intro might be too long, so I thought of cutting it down but eventually decided against it. You know, I tried more driving banjo part, but it didn't work too well. It does pick up in the chorus, though. An...

    Low-Fi Folk-Rock

This is a tune I did with a couple cheap Chinese condensers (SP B1, MXL 990) and a SM 57. I play all the intruments and sing on it. The track is called Gordon Tawney. Tell me what you honestly think. http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=4611&alid=-1 Regards, Mike

    DId DOT post this yet??

You know, what I dislike most about that recording is the snare sound. It's ironic.... Other than that, it really is quite excellent. Better than most new-country... :)

    My Second Tune: 70's-y Rock

How does the new mix sound? Is the intro OK? Regards, Mike

    My Second Tune: 70's-y Rock

Thank you all for your nice comments and criticisms! :) Beatles, eh? I was thinking it had more of a T-Rex vibe, but hey, I'm not complaining. As for screaming, your suggestion is duly noted but I think that it might not fit with the lyrical content. A new mix is now up featuring boosted vocals...

    My Second Tune: 70's-y Rock

Hola Amigos, This is my second time throwing something up here for critique. I have taken a long hiatus owing to my backpacking trip around South America. The song is called "Long Distance" and it thematically refers to a time one year ago when my gf and I were apart. I wrote it at that time...

    Mxl990?

This is bang on. I have both and the B1 is far, far better on everything (except possibly acoustic guitar).

    mxl 990 an improved 603s?

That would also put me in that crowd -- the 990 has always sounded TERRIBLE on vocals. There is a hideous upper midrange peak. I far prefer the 57 on all voices I have experimented with.

    Boosting output of vintage mic

Ah yes, it is a high Z mic if I remember correctly. I will look into that, and "daisy chain" otherwise". Thanks for the suggestions!

what is that 75 million selling record with the sm-7?

Yes, you are right. bleyrad: True, the sales figures have as much to do with MJ's dance moves as they do with the vocal sound -- if not more.

what is that 75 million selling record with the sm-7?

Yeah, I'm sure he is a reliable source. That post isn't resolving the Billie Jean/"Thriller" SM7-vs-SM57 debate, however, since he is talking about "Bad".

what is that 75 million selling record with the sm-7?

Hey, I wonder what mic appears on the most high-selling records. Like the mic that appears on the most copies of the most records. My guess would be the U47.

    Boosting output of vintage mic

Howdy, I just purchased a cheapo mic off of EBay for 1 Pound. It is the Sony F99. I tested it out this morning and the ouput is extremely weak (although I do like what output there is). None of my preamps has enough gain. The question is: Can I boost this mic's output, and, if so, how?

what is that 75 million selling record with the sm-7?

Well, for the record, he says he worked on "Bad" not "Thriller".
