    Pete Townshend on analog...

Many good points. If one takes the time to read the whole interview with Pete one would conclude that he neither endorses analog only nor digital only. I came away with the thought that one should work with whatever one is comfortable with be it analog or digital. He says he uses RADAR also at...

differences between pro tools and adobe audition?

I am just trying to point out that, IMO, one is not as limited in their choices of gear that can be used with PT as implied by the post by Guitarer. I realize that this may not be the consensus view. Contour Designs is a controller - ShuttlePro & the Shuttle Express. The Grace Design item is a...

differences between pro tools and adobe audition?

Gear from Contour Design, Logic Keyboard, Grace Design and CM Labs all work with PT. The CM Labs item is a console which is another interface besides Digidesigns and M-Audio.

differences between pro tools and adobe audition?

You are correct about the FireOne not working with ProTools as a work surface. I do apologize for my error.

    Pete Townshend on analog...

According to Pete he started out with 2 Vortexions and later added 2 Revox G37s. It's a great interview, well worth the read!

Tunes done on a VF16 for your enjoyment (or not)

Yeah, 100 or 150Hz would have made more sense in a way. Actually since the other bands have sweepable freqs I don't understand why they couldn't do the same for the low end. I imagine money was involved in that decision.

differences between pro tools and adobe audition?

I think the limit for tracks on the LE/M-Powered versions is 32 and I'm not sure on the midi track count. There is a fair amount of stuff that works with ProTools that is not Digidesign gear. Some of the interfaces and things like control items - the Fader Port and the similar Frontier...

    Guitar amp poll

Voted Fender - I have a 56 Pro which I wouldn't sell for anything - but I like Vox quite a lot (have a Beatle & Royal Guardsman) and Mesa is not too bad either. I figure the more amps you have the more tonal colors you have to play with and through. HiWatt is quite good sounding also.

Tunes done on a VF16 for your enjoyment (or not)

Thanks for your comments. I don't much like the low eq available on the VF, but that is not an excuse for not getting it better.

    EQing guitars?

If the sound eminating from the amp is the sound you want to record then placing a mic - be it 57 or whatever - anywhere in close proximity to said amp will yield a recording with the sound you wanted. Yes there are subtlties than can be taken advantage of, but if it doesn't sound right, where...

    EQing guitars?

When you say it sounds muddy are you meaning within the context of the whole song?

    EQing guitars?

I'd have to agree with Simman and NTK. Mic selection and position go a huge way towards capturing the good guitar sound you already have. But that comes first - a crappy sounding guitar is gonna stay sounding crappy regardless of mic choice and position. Closer to the voice coil is usually...

    The overall key to engineering?

What's your background and how much experience do you have in recording and mastering? To do a credible job anyone needs more than just the gear. Experience and a good ear are a must. There a many folks who believe that having a piece of gear oriented towards mastering makes it simple to come up...

Something I thought you folks might be interested in. Goldman, Sachs & Co. - who own GC - have sold GC to Brain Capital Partners LLC for $2.1 billion including assumed debt. According to Marty Albertson, chairman and CEO of GC they don't plan to change anything about GC vendor-wise. Source: Mix...

Tunes done on a VF16 for your enjoyment (or not)

Thought I'd point anyone interested to a couple of tunes I did on my VF16 about 4 years ago. They are 2 song parodies done entirely on my VF16 without any regard to small problems like my own off key singing in places. They are at http://www.soundlift.com/juanfernandes The titles in question...

    A Tune for Your Enjoyment

Thought you folks might get a giggle out of 2 tunes I put up a few years ago. I did them up on my Fostex VF16 just for fun. The titles are Feliz Navidad Parody and Bomb Saddam. Got some airplay on a local station on the Christmas oriented one - even requests to my surprise. here's the link...

Been to the big stores like GC just to see what's out there, but personally I'd rather buy from a local mom&pop even if it's a few bucks more cause I value the "added value" a mom&pop brings to the table. That's not to say I never use alternative stores be it mail order or big box. We musicians...

Best sounding album you have ever heard?

Forgot one important one which would be Group 87's first album on Columbia. Incredible sounding album with stuff that challenges the listener to figure out just how in the world did they do that? Released in 1980 it was available for a time on the One Way label on CD. Highly recommend!

Best sounding album you have ever heard?

As for best sounding - all of the Alan Parsons Project albums, all the Steely Dan albums and Robbie Robertson's eponymous first solo album. That one is really incredible sounding, especially when considering how it was recorded. Mostly live in what was being used as a storage space at the Village.
