Recording headphones - how do I chose?

Call me thrifty, but you've all got be insane! I'll be recording a band who wants to do all instruments live to tape so I have to pick up 3 more sets of cans this week. Mind you, this is no pro studio. So I came to this thread for advice. Tell me if my logic is off, or if any of the frugal...

    Akai DPS 16: SCSI

Hey DPS owners: Well the 10 gig HD is nearly full and the time has come to fork out for the SCSI CDRW for back-ups and archiving. So here's the issue, have any of you found that the apporved drive info available on the website is a little off? Particularly with the plextor and yamaha...

    What makes a good song?

I don't know if this has been addressed yet, but I was just thinking of other circumstances that seem to affect whether a song is a god song. Here's what I was thinking. I really like the band Social Distortion. Nice heavy rock sound. good melodies. but the most important thing I find makes...

Got a big project coming up, need some advice

I would at least do drums and bass "live." Guitars shouldn't take too long, right? Then vox and keys and whatnot. This way you'll have a little more control over the mix. I'm gonna be recording a college band on a shoestring budget in a few weeks. I can record 8 tracks simultaneously so...

    Inexpensive Isolation booth??

you would record the drums in the main room, I assume? I don't actually have true isolation, but something that drastically cuts down bleed. THe main room is about 18x30 and used to be set up for live rehearsal. REcently, we flipped the drum riser up on its side and stuck it diagonally in a...

Is it important to use a Head Demagnitizer for my MKII 414?

yeah. Unfortunately it is really important. You should do it to all of your tape heads for that matter. And clean the capstans and pinch rollers. These are the absolute most important things you can do to preserve the quality of your equipment, just ask my poor old 424. The first thing...

What CDR's do you guys use?

I have a batch of TDK's (blue ones, but we needn't get into that again) that are higly susceptible to failure at write speeds above 2x. This is especially true if I'm writing to cdr from a source cd rather than HD. 3 coasters yesterday. Good thing I got em for $.40 a piece.

    Guitar Recording..or playing?? tips

Guhlenn: I tried them out once. Think I left em on for about 2 & half weeks before I couldn't take it anymore. If you search, there's an old thread in which a bunch of people wieghed in opinions of elixirs. They really are a love em or hate em kind of string.

    Guitar Recording..or playing?? tips

Or try Gore Elixir strings. They're expensive and I hate them, but they don't screech too much.

warm fuzz tone - amp heads

That's odd. I read an interview with Rick Ocasek where, in talking about the weezer sound, he mentions that Rivers played through Orange heads. He goes on to talk about the way he flattened all the tone out of his sound by turning the tone down on his guitar and cutting the high frequencies on...

    What makes a good song?

Gidge: I realize I'm splitting hairs here, but what the hell--makes good conversation right? Nothing personal... Anyway, only in pop music (which can only loosely be considered art) has there been a strong movement that suggests that art is purely subjective. The kinds of things pop music...

    cable cleaners ?

I use this stuff called CRC 2-26. It's available at places like home depot or any electrical supply shop. I don't have any schedule for cleaning, suppose I just do it when something sounds scratchy or when I feel like it. It does make a difference though. I think you can huff it too, but it...

    garageband.com contest: alternative or punk???

That's funny that you mention those two bands Rats. From fairly limited exposure, I don't really care for either to be honest. With all due respect to them, my vision is of something more transcendent (of course it is!). I guess I'm still into the VU thing of taking yourself way too...

    garageband.com contest: alternative or punk???

In a way, I'm not sure that pulling it all together is something that can happen on a cognitive level. In other words, I don't think that you can plan the collision of influences. Well, you can to a degree, but for the most part it just seems to happen. The punk in you will spill over when...

    Record Label News Letter Software

Yo Pisces: Here's the catch with graphics. You need a couple of different programs. For instance: Photoshop for photo editing and things, Illustrator for illustrations (hmm where'd they come up with those names?) and desktop pusblishing software to put it all together. Now, Adobe these are...

THINK HARD - Artificial Double Tracking Question

Not sure about the 488, but the old 424 has RCA tape outs on the back. You could take a tape out and feed it back into another mixer channel. Of course, this doesn't solve the speed problem as you would be recording onto the same tape as the source. Any playback speed change would be recorded...

    garageband.com contest: alternative or punk???

Every time I read a review of a local band around here, it always says that their music is difficult to categorize. I say this may be true for the inarticulate rock journalist, but my point is that it has really become as much a cliche to be difficult to catagorize as it is to fall comfortably...

Guaranteed to be a Fun Question to Answer!!!

I was thinking record the acoustic direct from the dean Markley, careful not to clip at this point. Pipe that out from your soundcard into the micro or a cranked boombox that's mic'ed that with the condensor. Pretty much the same as Bones' idea, only I'd use the pickup for the initial...

CD Production... Use a company like Discmakers? Or do it myself with my computer?

They may not be the best in quality, but the company NEATO seems to be the best at getting their name out. They do make CD stickers and tray cards in gloss finish and should be available at any office supply store. I have a cheap HP printer and would be inclined to have covers printed rather...
