The orignal before sounds like a mic that would be used to record a pop diva. The after more midrange rock and roll.

    Overhead Samples JM27 / ADK Hamburg / Oktava mk012 |

I've got the JM 27's. They're almost an "effect mic". Strange mids and rolled off highs.

WHat's the deal with A/D/A and outboard Pres?

But are you running your outboard pres into the 1/4 jacks on the fireface? If you're running them into the XLR jacks, the signal is probably going into the mic pres, which won't sound as good. If you have a good mic going into good pres, I'd be suprised if the Firepod didn't do a pretty decent...

WHat's the deal with A/D/A and outboard Pres?

Yep, dgatwood is correct. Just need to plug in 1/4" TRS jacks to access 8 line inputs.

    Electric condensers Vs transformless

Dave, The SM58 is a dynamic, not a condenser. It has a transformer, as do most dynamic and ribbon microphones. Transformerless condenser mics were designed to have less effect on the signal than those with transformers, but this isn't always the case. In my estimate, if you're spending...

    Outboard Gear? Is it necessary?

    Outboard Gear? Is it necessary?

Exactly. Both can do things the other can't. Neither is "better"

    Outboard Gear? Is it necessary?

I've built a couple of Pultec type EQ's that can sound lovely with a +12 boost (of course, I think I'd want to just re-track something before have to EQ to that extreme, analog or digital). I think when it comes to every modelled compressor plugin, my statement hold true. Although I've only...

    Outboard Gear? Is it necessary?

Calm down fellas. I've got several cool pieces of outboard gear in the studio, and several nice plugins (UAD's specifically). The plugins sound great for most cases. However, when you really want to hit your compressors hard, the similarity between plugin and hardware ends. For example, I...

Good job ghetto3jon. That mic has definitely become usable. It's still bright, but in a much nicer way. It was sizzling before.

Neve Portico vs DMP3, VM Pro, Great River,

This thread is hilarious. I like it that our skeptical "electronics expert" has yet to admit that the Portico is transformer in and out. He also doesn't consider the number of high end preamps that use IC's. Rupert Neve in no way is trying to con people in to thinking that this is one of his...

Pre Amps, what are they good for? Absolutely...

Of course, try buying the home-built pre used in that article for less than $500 or so already manufactured (it's NOT going to cost $5). Also, when you build it, it's going to cost a lot more by the time you get it in a case. Cases, connectors, powersupplies, and tools to work with have to be...

    Converting to Pro Tools

Most of the M-Audio boxes have ASIO low latency monitoring. Never been a problem here, though I only use ProTools when I absolutely have to. ProTools M-Powered is pretty cheap though, compared to Cubase or Sonar, though. I got it on sale for $100 when it came out. When it comes to PT vs...
