    We should talk about artwork...

Haha foo, at first I had picked red white and blue simply because I like all those colors....then it suddenly occured to me that maybe it would appear a little too "USA" to our international members! Slackmaster 2000

    Thankyou Spammers!!

I think that the money situation is ok right now, but yeah, it would be great to have more orders! Really our goal is to sell them all out, right? The more we get rid of before we even have a shiney new product to show everyone, the better the chance of moving them all! At least I think that...

condenser mics TOO MUCH BACKROUND noise!!!

You can try reducing the amount of background noise....how's that for an answer :( This is probably the number one challenge for most homerec'ers. Sometimes we don't realize just how noisy or environment is until we plug a sensitive mic in. Play with the position of your mic. Try sitting or...

    Normalizing?

0db is as loud as any digital sample may be. Thus if you have a peak level of -0.5db and you crank the volume up on the track up by 5db, then you're chopping the hell out of at least one sample. In reality you're probably chopping a whole lot of your waveform all to hell and it's distorting...

What's wrong? Won't let me hear the take that I just punched in.

You didn't silence that section before doing the punch take did you? Also, this may sound stupid, but make sure the track isn't muted. Slackmaster 2000

    File Organization?

What I do is cram everything somewhere, and then when I can't find it later I redownload it all and stick it somewhere else where I'll lose it. Occasionally I actually record stuff, and when I do I usually forget to set my preferences up and the wave files go directly to the recycle bin (for...

    We should talk about artwork...

Since each disc will require its own screen job, the graphics on each disc can be completely different. Now of course it would be lame to make all the CD's look totally different from one another, so here's my idea: Instead of numbering the CD's (Disk 1, Disk 2, Disk 3), I thought maybe it...

    recording too harsh?

Welcome to one of the fundamentals of mixing - translation. If it sounds like crap in your car compared to similar mixes that you like, then it's simply a bad mix. Your problem boils down to monitoring. Without an effective monitoring solution, it's hard to make good mixing decisions. This...

A new studio just opened up a few miles from myne!

Some more things to keep in mind: Every successful business transaction results in two happy parties. If you decided to open up a recording studio with the hopes of learning as you go, then why would anyone want to spend their hard earned money on you? Consider that every dollar that you take...

Can a mix be accurately critiqued in MP3 format?

Here is your answer: Encode some professional recording that you really think sounds great. Then encode one of your own recordings. Play and evaluate them both. Does your mix suddenly sound sonically equivalent to the professional recording simply because it was converted to MP3? When you...

A new studio just opened up a few miles from myne!

Definately take C7's advice!!!! Also, setting a really low rate might sound like a great idea at first...but if your rate is too low, people are going to think it's because you suck. Really, $15 an hour is chump change. That means that after considering expenses and taxes (+self employment...

    would I gain any headroom....

That's right. Digital headroom is sort of reverse headroom. It doesn't allow you to track hotter signals, it just allows you track at lower levels, thus giving you more allowance for dynamics if you need it. Your only solution is to turn down. Oh, and you can get 100+ GB hard drives for...

MP3 vs Wave, etc.: For CD's, and for Internet, what is the best format for quality?

Re: More Wave / CD / MP3 Questions 1) Recording onto CD-s, and regarding Waves: I see that saving a file in 24 bit or 32 bit is possible. I would think that is far clearer and more desirable than 16 bit. Yet when I saved a song in 16 bit, 24 bit, and 32 bit, only the 16 bit made it onto the...

Let's say that one of your recording clients refused to pay there session bill.......

I think you should charge what you think is fair. The point is, don't mention that the price is low. Don't say, "well I'm just a guy in this spare bedroom here blah blah" ... and don't let them get away with things like not paying, just because you're a guy in a spare bedroom! :) In other...

Let's say that one of your recording clients refused to pay there session bill.......

I don't think you should be suggesting Jack Daniels to someone Zeke's age.....not yet anyhow :) I'd say that if you're charging $15 bucks an hour, and you're definately a little home studio, then your clients are going to be mostly kids with very little money. To somebody like that, $100 is...

    Old record noise

You're in luck, there's an awesome free vst plugin called Isotope Vinyl ... do a search for it. Other than that, you could always sample record noise from a record player...there's always some space between songs and at the beginning and end of the album that's just noise. Slackmaster 2000

    I give up.

Because it sucks that other members don't know what's going on in this forum...especially new guys. That's a shame. I've always been one to defend Dragon, because this is his place and without him we wouldn't be here. However, he said he'd create a vocalist forum and frankly, he's not too...

Does N-track 3.x have "automatable effects"?

    Nope, it's a 3.x feature.

MP3 vs Wave, etc.: For CD's, and for Internet, what is the best format for quality?

A wave file is an uncompressed collection of audio samples...you can't get any "better" than a wave file...it is what digital audio is. If your audio is at 16bit, 44.1khz...then your wave file consists of 16bit samples (2 bytes) - and 44,100 of them per channel per second...hence the large file...
