    Booth

foam? some is better than none, Auralex is better than bed pads/egg crates. however, they're right, if you can afford it, wrap some 2" 703 (rigid fiberglass) in burlap or muslin and hang them instead. if you have to use either screws or nails, use nails. if you're set on getting foam, why not...

$100, and easy? https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=260527 that's my quick process of making my panels. $130 or so final cost. cheaper and easier? throw a mattress (2 is better) in the corner of the dorm room and record there.

    Need some advice

yeah, the 4" Roxul you showed is a good deal. great site to get it from too! use those for some gobos so you aren't confined to any one area, and you can move them as needed. run to Wal-Mart or your fabric store for some cheap burlap. the closet idea isn't recommended, i was just saying that's...

    Need some advice

can you record your vocals facing, or in, a well-clothed closet area? the acoustic guitar will be tough to tame unless you enclose yourself when recording. as much as i don't like the idea, i'd say your cheapest bet is going to be moving blankets w/ a PVC frame. i know how being tight on money...

I still don't get the point of monitors

the original poster has a good point, though. i can relate since i've been mixing with my headphones (audio technica somethings). i always have for over 6 or 7 years against all "don't EVER mix with headphones" warnings. why? because i reference those mixes with other speakers. let me spell it...
