    Public Mix Contest #7

I thought the deadline was the 13th, was it extended? I may take another swing at it.

much to like about this mix too. Cymbals really stand out, not many mixes pulled these out of the mix that well. I think the guitar effect robbed the tune of some power, but it sounds cool.

been listening to the mixes, all of them seem pretty good to me. Heard some guitars that sounded a bit thin, maybe one with vocals a tad loud. Most of the drum tracks turned out pretty good. daunt, omfg how did you get the drums to sound like that :O, you pulled the boom off of the bass...

My final should be up on the ftp server (doug_h_mc7.mp3). Anyone interested can check it out here http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1830&alid=476 ->mc7 I'd like to volunteer to judge the next one. I'm not remotely qualified, and I know my mixes aren't the best, but I think...

So when is it too much?

Song sounds pretty cool. Sometimes crappier recordings can be more endearing. I think what you're talking about is different tho. There's nothing wrong with you lol, doing everything right is great, but perfect blah is still blah... Maybe you just grew fond of the older mix and the new one...

This is a cool song to mix. I have to admit, I wasn't overly optimistic when I first fader upped the tracks, but I'm starting to totally dig how it's turning out that being said it's still one of my crappy mixes, and I've got some eye poking high mids to deal with...

Ya, I noticed that, I don't think it's anything I'm doing. I have no idea how to fix it tho, some kind of low pass?

This sounds solid, very controlled. do me a favour and send me the printed bass track lol, just kidding. It's almost too sorted out to my ears, you'd get a solid 10 in the "bleed" category, or lack there of, if there was one. good mix

sounds pretty cool, guitars are a bit thin. The heavy sections really work

I think I'm getting better and pulling drums out of live tracks, but I can't seem to get the tinsel off of the snare. This is totally Sabbath to me.

    audacity vs Kristal...

Ya, Audacity isn't really good for mixing but it's great for editing and managing audio files.

    Favorite Guitar/Amp combination?

I've always been in the strat into a Marshall camp. I can live with any guitar into any pedal as long as it ends up with a couple of power tubes on the verge of exploding.

*Theoretically* (question about frequency and sample rates)

not really, even if the bass signal was only 20 or so hz, which it isn't, it's still good to have a higher resolution digital signal for lot's of other reasons. In a general sense tho, I would think cymbals would benefit more from higher sampling rates.

ah cool, not bad. I think I could have done better in a couple categories backing off one of the horn pairs a bit. Most of the mixes sounded pretty good to me, and the scoring seemed pretty tightly packed as a result. For some reason I think it was a hard tune to make really sing, so I RT's...

    guess my gear

wow, that sounded pretty good, what amp(s) was it set to?

    Practising with my tube head

make sure all the ohm stuff matches up. I don't know about it well enough to say how to do it, but my understanding is you can fry the amp if there isn't enough resistence on the speaker.
