I use Powertab. General MIDI guitars sound really bad, but it allows me to get my arrangements together. I write all of my guitar solos in it too. I've even had some happy accidents because of Powertab.
For lyrics I use MS Word and www.rhymezone.com!
On limited quantities at Musicians Friend. Call and ask them how many they have. They won't give you an exact number, but if you get a cool rep on the phone you can play a hot or cold guessing game with them.
The last time I inquired about a limited quantity item, I was able to find out they had...
from the option in the link I'd go with the Fostex VF80EX package. I've got a Fostex VF160, and it is very easy to operate and get a good recording. The internal CD burner is a must have too.
Yeah, I'm running pretty hot. Dumping the bass by about 6 db during the distorted parts pretty much clears it up and there isn't noticable dropping out of the bass either.
Thanks for the replies.
I've got a VF160. It works fine for what I do. Mine has a CD burner. The only differences between a VF160 and a VF160EX are the color and the EX doesn't have the SCSI port.
Apparently, older VF160 machines didn't have CD burners and larger hard drives, both of which were standard when I bought...
When I solo my bass and vocal tracks they sound fine. No distortion at all, but when I run them together they distort in spots. It is usually one word that gets distorted.
I have them both panned straight up the middle. If I crank one off center the distortion lessens in proportion to how far...
I've had mine for two years(paid $799, new). I love it. It is so easy to use. I downloaded the PDF manual and read it three times before the vf160 arrived so I was ready.
My only complaint is that the low EQ is a 400Hz shelf. You cannot adjust frequency or bandwidth. Not really a show stopper...
EPSON makes some printers that print on CDRs. You have to get inkjet printable media. I have the 300 model I think. It works fairly well. The CD loader tray is a bit of a pain in the ass at times.
They don't look like screen printed CDs, but it beats the hell out of a Sharpie or those crappy...
The vf160 manual states that you can't cut out a section and have what came after it automatically move up to cover what you cut out. I had to remove a bridge section from one of my songs and half of a guitar solo from another. Here is a simplified version of how i did it:
You have a program...
I bought a Fostex vf160 two years ago. Never had any problems with it. It can record 8 simultaneous tracks. Has effects, EQ, compressor, mix automation, mix down, burn to CD. $700 new. $300-$400 used.
The only thing is the low EQ consists of a 400Hz shelf. No frequency or bandwidth(Q) options...
I've owned one piece of Behringer gear. It was some Sonic Maximizer/Exciter thing. It worked fine, but was noisey as fuck. I actually made $8 when I sold it on eBay.
Thanks for the critiques and compliments. On with my rambling reply:
So my vocal performance sucks and my lyrics are lame? What is it about them specifically? They seem off key in spots. They were tracked in December. I can't sing what I hear in my head. I don't have the vocal range.
Having...
The Culling is the song I attempted to mix on my partially functional Fostex VF160. It tranlates well as is every where I have listened to it save my mother-in-laws Ford Focus.
The other one, Mission Control, is an MP3 I threw up to open my Soundclick account. It's just a rough level and pan...
Hmmm....homeless, over $1000 a month in child support and loss of influence over my kids......no thanks!
I'll just stare longingly at my pair of Fostex 0.5 monitors and dream about how cool it would be to actually get to use them in a properly treated room. I've been able to get my mixes to...
The mention of UN-amplified guitars(read my post again), yes UN-amplified electric guitars, was to get the point across that I cannot make any noise while I track and/or mix. BTW, I was working out a guitar solo when she complained about the UN-amplified electric guitar being too loud. I wasn't...
I'm in the same boat. I can only track/mix late at night. If I have to have two closed doors between my wife and I because an unamplified electric guitar is keeping her awake, how in the seven planes of hell am i suppossed to use monitors?
