are you saying you are going from your 1604 into an ADAT, then into the 002? if so, which adat are you using? what exactly are you looking to record with this preamp? vocals? bass? everything? i am not familiar with the way the RNP sounds, but if you want an amazing pre/compressor at a steal...

pro tools mpowered includes an ilok. no additional purchase neccessary... an ilok is a usb dongle that holds your PT MP authorization as well as plugin authorizations. the good, you can put all your plugin liscenses on it and move from computer to computer all you want and use your plugins...

i guess i like to spend time making music and not researching hardware software compatibility. i also dont like wasting my time converting protools sessions just so i save a buck or two on software and hardware.. to each his own i guess... ;)

it depends on how you look at it. proprietary hardware means it has been tested at length, and is pretty much garranteed to work. with protools, the hardware and software work as one. i dont consider it a limitation at all, but an advantage. this is also the reason i choose to go the mac route...

in your situation (college student) i would scrape and save (sell a nut maybe?) as much as you can for a macbook (non pro). you will thank me later... also, apple has student discounts. it think it is about 10% off...

the music production toolkit also provides the 48 tracks. it is much less expensive than the dv toolkit. i found myself hitting the 32 track limit every now and then. i expanded to 48 and havent really hit that limit yet. imagine, they used to make due with just 24...lol
