i have an mbox mini, but its only used if i ever travel. It's an easy to use interface, but protools (comes with it).... if you dont have the money to buy a better interface, im betting your computer is gonna have a tough time with that program.
you can get 2x 1 gig ddr2 ram sticks for around $100 now. There will be a big noticable difference with anything you do on your computer going from 256. itll be well worth it.
for the most part yes. unless you are recording drums.
I only recently started recording by myself and I don't play drums. I don't really foresee myself using more than 2 tracks at once.
to clarify, when recording, get the buffer size as low as you can. Change the buffer size to as high as you can during playback.
Even if your soundcard doesnt provide asio drivers, there are other drivers you can download online that are pretty universal for asio. I've never tried it...
yeah the line input would be much better than the mic input
for whichever input you use though, click the volume icon on the bottom right of your screen, switch the properties to recording and make sure the volume is up on whichever input and that it's check marked.
Have you chosen a DAW yet? If not, try out REAPER. Easy software to use thats cheap after the 30 day trial. It would be good for you, assuming your just going to be doing analog work.
the performance improvement might not be noticeable, but it sure is also convenient if you ever want to transfer to another computer.
I bought a firewire 320 gig mybook from a local best buy for $160, im sure you can find it online for much less. pretty much silent, easy to install, and hasnt...
a recording interface is going to improve the quality of your tracks a lot. Also the interface will provide a preamp for your mic. A mic's signal is originally very low, the preamp will boost it up so you can actually hear it. Some can also provide phantom power incase you ever end up wanting...
i tried both of them out and I do like the mackies preamps slightly better, but I want to use the mackie as inputs more so for convenience. Those breakout cables make a mess behind my computer :D
Hello
ok. I got my Mackie all set up except for the connection to my computer.
What I want out of the mixer is just something I can plug my instruments/mics into and record from my mixer. I'm probably not going to do the mixing with my Mackie, i'll do that within my DAW. And I also want to...
I'm so glad I opted for XP rather than Vista when I built my new computer. I only heard bad things about Vista so I decided to wait for all bugs and software to come out for it.
It can be an expensive hobby, but your absolutely right, its fun
Thanks everybody for your input. It's cool to see where everyone has started from. As for me, looks like its gonna be grueling but satisfying process. Now while I wait for my gear to get here... I have some reading to do.
recording vocals in a bathroom wont sound as good as it does when you sing in the shower.
from what I understand, the tiles, mirrors, ceramics, and whatnot will get rid of only certain frequencies and you won't receive a good balance. It virtually deadens the room.
there. I dont know much...
Hello
I've been watching these boards for a while, trying to soak up some knowledge along the way. Most everything goes over my head though. I want to really start getting serious about recording, but it's hard for me to grasp the lingo and vocabulary that comes along with it.
So how did you...
I'm looking to buy that Mackie mixer that you suggested, but this may be a stupid question, but how do I connect the mixer to my soundcard?
and thanks a lot guys for the responses. I really appreciate it.
thanks a lot for the response
I'm glad you showed me Reaper, im gonna go ahead and try the trial... looks like all I need. And I'm going to try and get my sound card properly working with the links you provided later today.
My Delta 1010LT's I/Os got me kind of confused. Say I do get one of...
Hello everyone
I've been watching these forums for a bit while i've been trying to get together my own little home recording station going on. I'm almost done (I think) so I'm getting excited and I wanted to know if you guys think I'm on the right track. And also I have a couple of questions...
