By A/D I assume he means a Audio interface.
Skip the mixer and go with a USB or Firewire(Assuming you have a firewire port) audio interface.
And also do you self a favor and buy a Condenser mic over the SM-57/58 mic's.
They are getting more inexpensive and of better quality all the time...
It probably sounds bad for two reasons:
1. The BR uses a data compression to get more time out of the memory card so your lacking in a true full range recording.
2. your using the real bad built in mics....:(
Well for starters the "BIG PANICKED POST TITLES" Don't make for great friends round here.
And to be of help:
Most powered mixers don't make for the best "Multi-Tracking mixers" unless they have multiple line outputs(Never hook up the speaker outs to a sound cards in's, Just in case...
Man everything looks brand spanking new!:) Hasn't even taken the paper of the acoustics pickguards yet!:D
Where did you get that platinum Cake record!?!?!?!?!? Can I have it? :D
I don't see any info on Edirol's site as to it being USB 2.0....... You may want to e-mail their tech support and confirm before you buy it and find out its not.....:(
The UA-101 is 2.0 but I would guess its more spendy. But I wouldn't be discouraged from getting the UA-25EX by any means. Great...
Or if you like the room sound you can also just put one Large Diaphragm condenser mic up and get the whole kit. But you will have to experiment with placement and the sound can depend on your Genre of music a bit too.
I do know in the past that people like Trent Reznor and Lenny Kravitz Have...
Acid Studio(The cheap one), Is a good option as you can lay out tracks on a grid as well and put beats together and copy and paste as needed. I use Reason now for all my drum programming. And it works well for me.
Yep or you could skip the cruddy 57 and get this folowing setup:
Since you say your budget is $250 or less.
you could get a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB:

and a real microphone like this:

and be right on...
True and not true. Some folks have had issues with the firebox not powering up off of the firewire port.
I have a less than one year old macbook and firebox and they work just fine.
Good Choice! Edirol's are nice. I use to manage a guitar shop were we sold various interfaces(M-Audio, RME, Creamware, Edirol to name a few).
I always liked the fact that Edirol thought enough to make their interfaces out of metal and made them rugged. Considering the portability factor that is...
That's were a mixer could help. And while it maybe nice to have a lot of mics on your drums it may not be necessary as you may only use a few of the tracks in the end. Experiment with it and see what works best(I only use 4 mics on a kit at the most), It also depends on your Genre of music too...
He has a laptop not a desktop..... :)
Specs on the computer would be good(Speed, Ram, Processor Model)
This is a better option

"Recording Tips For Engineers - For Cleaner, Brighter Tracks" By Tim Crich
Has a lot of great tips on placement and tons of info, Oh! and it has a lot of great jump off points when learning how to EQ and Compress individual instruments.
I'm gonna stick my neck out and recommend a couple of *GULP* M-Audio USB interfaces. Both USB 1.1.
I have and occasionally use a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB($130 to $150 depending on where you buy) and Love the hell out of it. Several of my friends who are PC users have and love it as well.
Down...
Settle down dgatwood. :D
That is odd, You will have to excuse my cynicism as that as you may know a lot of folks here on HR can be a bit biased against products when there is no just reason.
That's weird though, Know one I know has ever had that issue or any others with it for that matter...
If your going the PCMCIA card rout get one with a TI(Texas Instruments)Chipset.
Most manufacturers of firewire interfaces prefer them for compatibility.
How old is your laptop(Processor speed and model would help)?
USB 2.0 onboard at all?
Pro tools can be a bit fickle when it comes to...
most good stores should have two things:
1. A good return policy
2. a sales staff who will help you get what you need and help you if you didn't.
Trust me I went though the same situation.
Yes that should be your line outputs. If its a cheaper keyboard(with speakers) and its a single jack that says output L R then you would need a splitter(trs to two ts cables, stereo to two mono if you will). Still good to use a DI box.
