Is it unwise to run 220V European TASCAM 238 on UK 240V voltage?

A frustrating afternoon trying to make a buck transformer. The transformer I bought and linked above has no spec sheet with it, has no download for it and the support both online and telephone from RS Components is non-existent. I've tried working out what the outputs are, but what I've found...

Local TASCAM M-512 bargain, is recapping unavoidable?

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on that re-cap issue AshokanKid. Thanks, Al

Is it unwise to run 220V European TASCAM 238 on UK 240V voltage?

Interesting Rob that conclusion by your friend at Philips. I guess I am being too cautious (which if you knew me....isn't like me at all.......must be old age creeping in). I wonder if I am at the start of a supply chain, as the sub-station that presumably serves our house, is located across the...

Is it unwise to run 220V European TASCAM 238 on UK 240V voltage?

Just looking into stuff online and I came across a bit of gear that I have never heard about before, or ever seen advertised......the Micon Audio LMTC. If you're interested in syncing a Tascam 238 (or any Tascam with an Accessory 2 port) take a look...

Is it unwise to run 220V European TASCAM 238 on UK 240V voltage?

WOW...thanks Cory. I haven't opened up the machine....it's like a new baby, I don't want to go operating on her unless I know she's broken (Hipporatic oath - 'first, do no harm'). It never occurred to me that there may be a service manual online. Anyway, I've found one although the scan isn't...

Is it unwise to run 220V European TASCAM 238 on UK 240V voltage?

Thanks Rob for the reply. As I've mentioned elsewhere, this Tascam 238 is in mint condition. It came with the original box and the seller (who deals in Studer and the like) said it had had the capstan PC board replaced (I'm not sure whether it was the whole assembly including motor or just the...

Is it unwise to run 220V European TASCAM 238 on UK 240V voltage?

Thanks for the replies guys.......I ordered the transformer this morning (grrrrrr!). Any thoughts on why Tascam made a 220V version and a 240V version (unless of course they are the same transformer?). Is it for legalities?

Is it unwise to run 220V European TASCAM 238 on UK 240V voltage?

Just been researching 'bucking transformers'....sounds like what I need. Will this meet the requirement: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/chassis-mounting-transformers/0504650/ I've been watching this guy do one with 120V:

Is it unwise to run 220V European TASCAM 238 on UK 240V voltage?

My mint condition European model 220V (47W, 50Hz) TASCAM 238 turned up today and cosmetically it's like it's just left the factory. I was just about to turn it on and then I thought I'd check the back to see if it was a 220V model or if it had a selectable voltage. Apparently there were 4 models...

Just started reading the preface to 'Art of Electronics and wondered who the book was dedicated to: https://www.edn.com/analog-guru-jim-williams-dies-after-stroke/ The brilliance of the internet.

Just came across some more resources for anyone trying to learn online about electronics and audio in particular. Here's a great response with some great suggestions: https://ask.metafilter.com/139006/How-to-teach-myself-audio-electronics This led me to this: https://tangentsoft.net/audio/...

TASCAM 688 MIdiStudio problem with metering and switching on track 3

So I woke up thinking.......it can't be that hard to find out what's causing the overload LEDs on CH5 and CH8 to illuminate all the time. Sweetbeats had said, 'The stuck clip LED may be the opamp driver latched up'. I'm not sure which bit this would be, but I have found a reference to an...

TASCAM 688 MIdiStudio problem with metering and switching on track 3

YAY! I had the input channels off the mixer again today to try and cure: 1. The overload led on channel 5. It is fully lit 2. The overload led on channel 8. It slowly creeps on, though not as much as channel 5 3. The hum that has appeared on channels 4,7,8 and 10 4. The noise on the CUE MONITOR...

    Tascam M520 Story...

If you envisage plugging and unplugging stuff, you could possibly use an RCA snake to jack snake and wire a jack patchbay in. That way you could easily plug stuff in and out. You may run the risk of adding some noise to the signal path as it would be unbalanced. Good luck. Al

TASCAM 688 MIdiStudio problem with metering and switching on track 3

Cheers Papanate, yes that seems to be the consensus. I'll have to open it again and see if there's anything obvious......what's strange is that it affects 4, 7, 8 and 10. It seems a little abitrary, not like they're channels next to one another on the BUSS PCB. When I got the unit I checked the...

    Just to let some know

Thanks for the replies skywave. I guess there just aren't enough hours in the day to get things done. At the end of it all, this is all a means to keep my own stuff working, rather than mending other people's gear. I am a musician first and foremost, but to keep this aging equipment going...

    Just to let some know

If you know of any online resources I'm all ears...I know a little stuff, but not enough to sit down and methodically troubleshoot problems. I also don't know how to safely hook up meters and scopes when the units are on and when or how to supply say a board with voltage and check it through...

TASCAM 688 MIdiStudio problem with metering and switching on track 3

I had the machine on for a couple of hours today, recording some test stuff and erasing some tapes. After this length of time, the white noise on the CUE MONITOR BUSS was significantly reduced to the point where you had to have the monitor knob up full to hear it. There was still slight hum on...

    Tascam M520 Story...

I've owned two MS16 in the past. They're rugged transports, but I was told by one engineer they used to call them 'butter heads'.....apparently they wore quicker than other heads. I never owned them long enough to find out. The sound was creamy (with or without the DBX) but I found with reel to...

Nostalgic about reel decks I sold

I spent the day revisiting this guy.... https://www.soundonsound.com/people/jyoti-mishra-today-derby-tomorrow-world I was in London when this came out with my three ADAT setup and a Soundtracs desk with a Lexicon PCM70 reverb and a Boss SE70. This guy had a number one with much less...
