    New Song: "Tennessee Blues"

Thank you for the kind words gentlemen. Okay, I think this thread should end. I hate dredging it back up to the top of the list. Hey Gospel, please check your private message. Anyway, since I'm here, the mic cost $140CDN ($95US). The ART tube MP pre-amp cost $130 CDN ($87 US). I didn't...

    latest VF160 recording

Jeff, Excellent recording and guitar playing. You definitely have that Pink Floyd feel to your guitar playing. I guess the slow tempo of the song also contributes to that Pink Floyd sound. I enjoyed it. The Fostex VF160 sounds good. By the way, what's a "band in a box"? Do you mean the...

Blues Rocker Recorded on VF-160/Puter Combo

Hey Axe, By the way, I like your handle. I get it now after looking at the list of your songs posted on NWR. Christian music is really rocking these days. I like the guitar work in general, particularly at 2:17 which reminds me of a riff Knopfler did once upon a time. Did you play guitar on...

    New Song: "Tennessee Blues"

Hey Earl, I assure you, the original recordings of those songs were considered "country". I guess I bastardized the songs so badly that all the "country" flavour is gone! Like Gospel once said, these songs really should be sung by someone with a Southern drawl, not someone with a...

    Mics Used at the Grammys?

Thanks Chris. Sorry, I should have done a search. KF

    Mics Used at the Grammys?

Just curious to know what mics were used at the Grammys on Sunday, especially the ones used by the Dixie Chicks (it looks like a condenser mic?!), and by The Boss (looks like a Sennheiser?). What about the ones used by YoYo Ma and James Taylor? Any ideas? KF

    New song finished!

Hey Dyoub, That's a very innovative way to record the vocals. You should be given the "Best Use of a Cup" reward!:p KF

    New song finished!

Good work Dyoub!! You're the first person I know who comes from "Tuna-On-Rye"! ;) I really dig the bass line. It's got a nice hook. Your ukelele sounds very warm and I like the way you put it upfront. I'm always fascinated at how you record the vocals. How did you get that funky sound...

    A love song

Hey Mr. Vader, Being a Bob Dylan fan, I really don't mind the singing at all. Your vocal style is quite unique to say the least, but the music is very well written (well, except for the guitar part being out of tune). Then again, maybe that was your intention. God knows my vocals aren't...

    New Song: "Tennessee Blues"

Thank you kindly gents. The good thing about Knopfler's vocal style is that it is not too difficult to emulate. Afterall, Knopfler is not known for his vocals! I just wish I could play guitar like he does though. With respect to recording the vocals, I used the APEX 430 condenser mic and the...

    Tennessee Blues - Please Listen

Thanks for the comments gentlemen. It's encouraging to know that I'm not wasting my time in this hobby. To Alexpetty: I'm definitely a Straits fan. My nickname is dead giveaway. I really should have chosen another nickname in the beginning. To Smokepole: Thanks for the feedback. I...

    New Song: "Tennessee Blues"

I'm not sure what is the correct ettiquette in terms of posting same contents to more than one forum, but I thought I'd share my latest recording with my Fostex family as well. The song is called "Tennessee Blues" written by Bobby Charles. Once again, it's another country song in 3/4 time...

    Tennessee Blues - Please Listen

Here's my second post to the Mixing Clinic forum. Let me apologize in advance, it's another country tune in 3/4 tempo. :p Please have a listen. I would appreciate any feedback on how I can improve. Thanks, KF Toronto, Canada http://www.nowhereradio.com/knopflerfan/singles

    Sound Quality of Bounced Tracks

Thanks for the responses, but now I think I'm more confused than before.:p I guess there really isn't a clear answer to all of this. I'll do some more experimenting and see what happens. Perhaps I'll bounce everything dry (no panning, no effects, no mastering) and see whether I still notice...

    Sound Quality of Bounced Tracks

Okay, I can safely say that I have noticed a difference in the sound quality when tracks are bounced, even with a digital recorder like the MR-8. Over the weekend, I tracked 4 instruments onto 1 thru 4 and bounced to 5/6. I then erased 1 thru 4 and recorded an additional 2 tracks onto 1 and 2...

    Fostex MR-8 recording

Hey FB_Krawl, nice picking! I enjoyed your guitar work. What's your setup? What kind of guitars were used? Did you record the rhythmn guitar first and overdubbed the lead? Anyway, good job. KF

    MR-8 update released!!!

New Version Updates? I'm sorry to dig this back up-- can someone please tell me what the new version will update? Was there something wrong with the old version? Thanks, KF

    Pre-amps for Dynamic Mics

My Fostex MR-8 has pre-amps, but I find it rather weak. Even with the Sennheiser E-835 mic, I have to turn the trim to max to get a decent volume. I asked the salesperson whether a pre-amp (Art tube pre) will make things better and he told me that with dynamic mics, the pre-amps won't help...

    Cardiod, Unidirectional ?????

Can someone please enlighten me on the different types of mic patterns? I recently purchased a Sennheiser e-835. Is this a cardiod? I found that the old Sherman mic that I was previously using, picked up a larger sound field than the Sennheiser (i.e. with the same level of trim, I can sing...

    Advice on bouncing tracks

Currently, I am not using any software program to mix the tracks recorded with the Fostex. I try to bounce and mix everything using that little red machine. As a general rule of thumb, do you add effects, mastering and etc...when you bounce the tracks to 5/6? Or, do you bounce the tracks "dry"...
