    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

This. I have crappy recordings of badass musicians that I listen to in spite of the dodgy fidelity. We should never forget that the purpose of recording music is to capture great performances. Those manning the board should become as good at this as possible, certainly, but a bad performance...

    Quitting

Good lord, what an awfully old thread. Yet it's a perennially relevant question. If you can quit, do. It's a hard life, and there are plenty of other fields in which you can have a easier existence. But if, like me, you have no idea who or what you would be if you weren't making music, then...

    Odd recording techniques anyone???

Ditto the inkjet printer. Used a phone ring along with that myself. I keep having people ask me about the rhythm track on Office Suite, Part I from my first record. It's just me drumming with my hands on a wooden table, with my wedding ring on one hand acting as a snare drum of sorts. I ran...

    Home recording mixer question

Just to add, I'm not advocating the above as a long-term strategy, just that if he's getting a cheap mixer, Tapco's a good choice. It is true that at some point, there will need to be a better A/D converter purchased. Kinda depends on financial circumstances.

    Small studio setup

Tim, thanks for the tip on the free TapeOp subscription. Had no idea. Even non-newbies must continue to learn...

    Home recording mixer question

Tapco's a good choice, I use it to stream my live shows. Y-cable from the tape out to the sound card input, bammo. Great, clean quality.

    Anyone selling their music online?

Been looking at this myself, and the thing that bothers me about Tunecore is if you upload a single or album, you pay an annual $9.99 fee for that single or album each year. That's in addition to the upfront fee AND a cut of sales. Seems excessive to me. I prefer CD Baby's model, but at the...

    Splitter Recommendations?

Hi all, I've got a Behringer DI20 that I use for splitting guitar & bass signals between an amp simulator and an actual amp. It works okay, but my experience with other pieces of Behringer gear makes me wonder if I'm losing some signal in the process. I saw the Nady DB-1 online, but sometimes...

    Like TU-88 But Cheaper?

I'd actually just like one that doesn't bother with the tuner/metronome aspect at all, since I've got one of each of those. But I will browse the Behringer options, good call...

    Like TU-88 But Cheaper?

Hi all, So my wife has decided to go to Rock Camp in May, and we're getting her started on bass. I'd like to get her a little practice unit like the Boss TU-88, but I wonder if there isn't something that does the same thing (pipe in CD or mp3 player and instrument direct, listen via headphones)...

DVerb eminating extremely loud digital static noise...

I hate to mention the no-brainer, but have you rebooted the computer and PT interface? That tends to fix mystery feedback issues on mine, anyway...

    Cool, I'll take a listen.

    What you made possible

Just a note of thanks to the denizens of this board, who have made my journey in home recording possible for the past 8 years. The most recent result is my new album, February, which was just released this week by Wampus Multimedia: http://februarythealbum.com/ It's a combination of...

Best hard disk recorder for the money?

Though I've long since left the standalone recorder world for that of ProTools, a friend of mine got his perfectly decent Roland VS1880 burgled recently. He doesn't have a good computer, nor a lot of money, so I'm trying to find him something inexpensive and workable, since he won't be able to...

Okay, I changed my mind. Get the lava lamp.

$100 to spend.... what to get?

Cables, absolutely. I preach the gospel of good cables to any poor bastard who happens to wander by. Which today is you.

    Need Recording Equipment Advice

ProTools M-Powered might be a good start, a good mix of affordability and features. You'll find, however, as you probably already have, that opinion on the "best" and "easiest" recording systems varies extremely widely, and you won't get a consensus on this board. But given that this is the...

    Best Pro Tools Plugins?

I'll second the Amplitube recommendation. I've used it on guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and lots of scary things. I like a lot of the instruments on SampleTank, but I only have the version that came with ProTools. Ditto on Reason Adapted, which has a fabulous Wurlitzer sampler and some...

making the most of a bad room?

I'm constantly amazed by the difference good cables can make. A mic with a high-end cable is a completely different mic than one with a cheapo cable.
