know a good guitar amp for a heavy rock tone?

Badass - Post up progress pics if you can. I spent some play time with an ancient plexi recently and the thing was fucking awesome - even at low volumes surprisingly dark and spongy for a Marshall. I kind of wanted it, but it didn't really come into its own until it got louder than I could get...

On a scale of 1 to 10, just how awful would a ceiling fan be?

Yep. I'm in the middle of everything in Somerville, but thankfully on a fairly quiet one-way street considering my proximity to the nearest major square, so that helps a bit. Still, if getting a great acoustic recording were ever absolutely critical, I'd just move my gear out to my...

On a scale of 1 to 10, just how awful would a ceiling fan be?

For now I've been doing the "crank the AC and then hope it goes well" thing. Actually scratch that. For now it's winter in Boston. I'll see how it goes in the summer, maybe I should just suck it up and go with central air. I think for any serious tracking I'd just pull the unit and close...

know a good guitar amp for a heavy rock tone?

You know, it's funny, because the one thing I'll say for Nickelback albums is they have KILLER hard rock mixes. :laughings: How've you been, anyway, man? Aside from your shitty taste in amps? ;)

know a good guitar amp for a heavy rock tone?

I'm just giving you crap, man, no worries. :D Anyway, Nickelback isn't Mesa's fault, they'd have sucked just as bad with Marshalls!

know a good guitar amp for a heavy rock tone?

Don't mind the man behind the curtain. :D Mesas are tough for $500 or less, but a F30, DC-3, or Nomad-45 miiiiight just squeeze into your budget. They do a very different sort of heavy than a Marshall, but if it's a sound you gel with (and I do, unlike Gregor here), they're awfully tough to...

My debut CD "Zero Mantra" is finally finished - instrumental rock guitar

This one was a LONG time coming. I've been tracking since 2010, talking about releasing it since 2005, and the oldest song was written in 2001. A bunch of my guitarist buddies used to joke for years that it was going to be a dead heat between my debut and Axl Rose's "Chinese Democracy." I...

On a scale of 1 to 10, just how awful would a ceiling fan be?

I live in the top floor of a 3 story condo building, and since it's Boston I don't have central air, and instead use window units in the summer. In my living room and bedroom, I've installed ceiling fans, which actually make a really big difference in the summer. I'm tempted to do the same for...

Good quality flat wound strings for a strat?

Haha, sorry Mutt, that wasn't me not being convinced, that was me thinking, "hmm, I never really thought of it like that" on a busy day at work while I was on here for a couple minutes. That definitely makes sense to me, against a full horn section you're going to want to be all midrange anyway...

Good quality flat wound strings for a strat?

    Hmm. Makes sense, I guess.

Good quality flat wound strings for a strat?

Why would you want to put flat wounds on a Strat? I'm kind of curious. They're generally fairly dark, middy, and sort of "dead" sounding, and are generally used with semihollow or hollowbody guitars in a jazz context. They're the complete opposite of a Strat, which is a bright, chimey...

    Line 6 Spider IV 150?

I'll second this, and also suggest a Fender Blues Jr. and a Tube Screamer. Assuming you have the technique, the touch on the instrument, and something vaguely Strat-y in your hands, these should all get you in the right ballpark. For jamming around you'll likely want a delay (does the Class 5...

How do YOU set up your room for guitar amp recording?

It's incredibly subtle, and you lose it in a full mix, but it's definitely in there. I also play shred/prog metal but pick like a blues guy using heavy picks, which doesn't help any. :laughings: My room is also currently untreated (I moved over the winter, 5 days before having ACL surgery, so...

(recording guitar tracks) 15 watt practice amp, steinberg C1 1 and shure sm 57

Yeah, if he's trying to do black metal, Greg, his problem here might be TOO much technology. Running that SM57 into an oldschool boombox and overloading the tape deck, then bouncing from the tape down to the computer so it's REALLY trashy might get him there. :)

How do YOU set up your room for guitar amp recording?

Interesting thread. I've always wondered about the benefits of decoupling a cab from the room - I play a 100-watt Mesa Roadster thorugh a Recto 4x12 cab, and it's semi-decoupled anyway on its rubber feet but I've been curious about products like that Auyralex pad. Not enough to actually buy...

    to kill a clicking pick

Yeah, I'd do this. It's also probably jumping out at you more than it will your buddy because its YOUR performance.

How good are the Waves CLA compressors?

Variety of Sound is supposed to be great, but it's Windows-only. The Stillwell stuff looks decent, I'll grab the eval copy and play around a little. And the T-Racks stuff does look pretty good. I'll think about it a bit - like I said, finances are a little tight at the moment (I need furniture...

How good are the Waves CLA compressors?

I was absolutely just kidding. I have the programming aptitude of a medium-rare steak. I can write a bit of SQL, and traces of HTML, but that's it. :laughings: Also, been talking with a buddy who just made the switch, and there's a fairly convoluted but totally workable way to run windows-only...
