I got hosed by Hosa mic cables........

once you start considering spending serious bucks on cable, it is my opinion that you should scratch-build it.

    New, Cheap Isolation Tracking Headphones

harvey, you are the man. 20 bucks for a pair of phones is right in my studio budget range! no more walmart headphones for me! seriously, if these things are even remotely useful, i think this should be a sticky topic. consider my first order on the way, with more to follow from me or others if...

The best way to learn how to do Screaming Vocals?

i'm not endorsing using effects, though i don't really care either way. my point is simply that different techniques are possible that may have likable results depending on what one wants.

Anyone ever heard of Indiana Guitars?

tubedude, i don't know anything about indiana guitars (though i have heard the name), but my primary guitar is an alvarez rd20u (the regular price was around 200 bucks, this one was 120 because of light cosmetic issues mostly on the back of the guitar). i t sounds and plays just fine. it's no...

    Acoustic Bass Guitar

in my experience, acoustic guitars feedback horribly in the bass registers, so it stands to reason that an acoustic bass would do no matter. that said, acoustic basses can vary widely in regards to their performance, in my experience. most sound decent, but don't fill out the low registers...

Tube Power as related to volume...

in my experience, a 10 watt tube amp will USUALLY spank a 10 watt SS amp, but that's not because the watts are different-rather, it's because the people designing the vintage tube amps that comprise most of the tube amps i've played (the others generally being retro-styled tube amps that...

    strings where

i prefer to support local shops, but the main local shop here charges around 10 bucks for a custom picked-out set of strings (~$2 per wound and ~$1 for plain strings, this is on acoustic), and i ordered 12 sets worth of bulk strings for something like $35-40 from musician's friend, which makes...

What's The Worst Microphone For Over $1000?

no way! i have a (L@@K!! VINTAGE!!!) radio shack highball-2 mic that i will gladly part with for $1000+ that will take the cup here!

    Cables: XLR vs. TRS, Balanced?

as a general rule, any properly-designed dynamic should have no issues with phantom power-it should be an open, irrelevant circuit issue. the real trouble is with ribbon mics. older ribbon mics had a design issue that basically made them a filament when phantom power was applied. this is not good.

    remove speaker, insert plexiglass

could you not set up something like a makeshift boundary mic for this?

    water and the vocal chords

amen about talking before a gig-open mouths=dry chords. i run hoarse just speaking during long intense conversations without water. singing is much more sensitive to that.

    Following the crowd

you know, it's funny-i PREFER to use the back button (or backspace key) when browsing, and it pisses me off when i can't (extremely common on newer websites) can't we all just get along?

How do you guys remember all your stuff when playing live?

how do i cope? mind-numbingly repetitive practice. also, when i do inevitably screw up, i live with it, because believe it or not, most of your listening audience DOES NOT KNOW you screwed up if you don't stop and beg them for forgiveness for forgetting a line. sometimes i'll forget a line and...

Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

the rules as i intended them (will look back and see what i wrote-i probably posted this in some vague state of incoherence, like the kind i experience while just waking up). what i really meant to get at is that rules on paper pale in comparison to rules from the ear, be it a naturally gifted...

    My G String...

toker, agreed. in my experience, contact points that snap strings are caused by wear-in from said strings (unless they were string-breakers stock), and a little light, careful filing will fix it.

Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

2 approaches, in my book: 1-if you have the ear to be able to hear and repeat intervals (i started in this group very young, so i lucked out, but you, too can learn intervals!), just listend to melodies you love. repeat them. maybe do them in different keys. once you find what really strikes...

    Taking the Plunge

the thing about lyrics is that the only halfway objective way to assess "merit" in them is to have people listen to/read them. lyrics on their own often don't stand out terribly much without the music they're sung with. this is okay! great poetry often does not translate well to music, at least...

The best way to learn how to do Screaming Vocals?

range for scream/growl type stuff, just like range for singing, is somewhat genetic, and somewhat practice. i can't do most straight screaming stuff without getting hoarse really quickly (think fear factory-martyr-i can rip this up, but then my voice is trashed). i can do inverse breathing...

can you give me some tips on how to learn how to "tap"?

the mechanics are fairly simple-you need to pop your finger onto the fret pretty qiuckly, and pull it off cleanly, unless you're trying to get some bendiness/wackiness on those pull-offs, then you can stretch them off, etc (i mess with bending on pull-offs on acoustic a lot, because i can't get...

    Do you re-write?

generally, i don't touch a song i write at all once it's written. that said, if i feel seriously inspired by a certain concept that i think fits, i may shoehorn it in, or if i think the whole song blows, but a few lines are exceptional, i may write a DIFFERENT song using the same few lines...
