I can get an old eMac for free. Has 1.25 ghz processor and 512mb of ram-I would upgrade that to its max, 2gb. Is this generally good enough to record onto? I use a Presonus Audiobox USB and only record 2 or 3 mics at most at one time.

The reason you hear noise on EXT MIC is because it is passing voltage through the line, as it thinks an electret mic is on the other end. It is unusual that it comes through without the preamp, but since it's a loud source, I am not all too surprised.

While I have not used the Fireface, I have run a Presonus Audiobox on XP Mode on Windows 7 just fine. Make sure you allow it to use enough RAM and close any background programs, though.

Remember the 57 and 58 are almost identical. Don't buy a 57 if you already have a 58 and don't need another one. The 58 does fine. You'll be hard pressed to find a noticeable difference on snare.

For clarification to the OP, Wikipedia is saying if you burn the waves directly to the CD as the wave files they wont work, which is true. You need a media software that burns it into the "CD format" and as others said, just about every free media software can do it.

Frank- that response should go into a sticky or something. It clearly explains why the egg cartons won't work in terms noobs and pros alike can understand. Anthony
