The later models appear to be better. It was a particular production run as those who found these issues during warranty were replaced with quiet phantom power. The hot direct output... Not sure. But if it works for you, great! :)
... that's what she said. (couldn't resist)
So at the same db level, the 8 would generally have perhaps a "cleaner-clearer" bass? I've been trying to justify the cost of an 8" vs the 6" vs what am I trying to achieve musically. Plus, I read about folks using sub-woofers with the 5"-6" models...
Great sticky on the small room!
So having also just gone through researching the "what size" monitor issue... Given I have a 10'w x 12'l x 8'h room (not ideal - getting ready to treat it). I'm still not clear if an 8" monitor is better than say a 6". I read into this (all things being equal)...
So... not to be a rant - but education for other newbies who are looking for "bang for the buck". You may find the Presonus floating around used. Avoid it.
Like many, I picked up a Presonus Audiobox USB interface a few years back for around $150 new. Only used it with my SM57 mic, and the xlr...
The HD also has scalloped bracing that changes the sound from the standard. Hopefully I'll get some time to play a few more. We have McCabe's, a well known guitar shop here in LA that I plan on visiting. No "deals" there but very knowledgable staff which can add real value to a sale.
Great help guys! Just the kind of info (and or confirmation) of what I'm looking at. Not a bluegrass guy. The issue of boominess is one of my considerations. I'm sure mic placement and playing style can dictate the amount of bass. I do layer my songs with electric and acoustic. All the Martins...
So been trying out several Martins: D-28, D-35, and the HD versions. Got the technical diffs down and to my ears the HD versions "pop" a bit more for lack of a better term.
The HD-35 sure seems like a standout for my strumming and muted flat picking. That said, not any experience with how they...
I've been making a few simple mixes then run them through my old Subaru Outback plain-Jane stereo for a second (third?) opinion. Sort of helps fine tune. Now I'm the proud owner of a Mazda3 with the plain sound system. The bass is over the top! I set it to -3 or -4 just to get existing...
Maybe run sets of cables and power cords through those corrugated cable organizer tubes. You could a least separate them in groups. Was thinking of doing the same.
Thanks all for the great help! The 2 mic setup sounds like the way. Ya, the Ovation was from another time... 1978. Never realized till years later they really only work for live playing (not the goto for a studio sound) Really like the Taylors as mentioned. I"ll try mic placement and get back.
Thanks for the tips. My current guitar is an Ovation Applause (non electric). I mic it with my SM58, but it sounds a bit flat. I've tried different mic positions but still not liking the sound. Perhaps a good primer in mic placement is online?
Anyone getting good results recording pickup equipped acoustic direct to your DAW? I see several brands of boxes (Zoom for example) for adding "flavor" to the tone for live playing. Was thinking my next acoustic guitar will have a pickup. Would simplify the process if there is any merit to it.
I finally got to "demo" (if one calls listening to them in an untreated room) at GS yesterday. Interesting to note is they were setup with 10 other models but were the loudest. I had to turn them down to compare to any others. I'm a little concerned as they made all the songs sound great as if...
There is a show on cable called "Crossroads" where they pair musicians from different genres. The pairing of John Mayer and Keith Urban was un-freaking believable! They traded some amazing licks!
Thanks for the replies,
The AB is a couple years old now. Been using an SM58 with no problems. The "hot" direct in is a well known issue (Strat with only single coils here). Previously, I was using an amp with a line out to the AB that worked great. I since started going direct in (Guitar Rig...
Looking at a condenser mic... But, before I buy anything... I currently own an Audiobox USB interface. Anyone here using a condenser mic for vocals with this unit? I'm reading horror stories of noise with phantom power. Also just like my direct in guitar, I will need a pad (mic choice may...
Maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges but... Would it not be a better deal then to just pick up the older hs80m's as they won't need the sub? While I'm a bit of a newbie... It seems to me it would make mixing easier dealing with only the monitors.
Just got back to this...
I wasn't sure if it was worth the effort as I only use one mic. If the phantom power is dirt cheap though then I'll give it a try. Does hold me back from getting a new mic without exploring the pre-amp.
