    Informal Mic Shootout

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to post this shootout, it's always helpful in some way even though the process is inevitably flawed in minor ways. Also I have been wanting to hear the Oktavamod 319, and also the SP-T3 which I guess is also a mod of some kind. Did you do the T3 yourself...

    Mic'ing a BIG vocal group?

I don't know a lot about this sort of thing but I've sung in a few choirs over the years and I remember a sound engineer micing a similar situation with one large condenser set on the omni or figure 8 pattern. There's a CAD GXL 3000 going on this link for a steal of a price if you want to do it...

    CAD M177 vs M179

I suspect the best person to ask would be Warren over at Front End Audio. He loves these mics and would know if a variation is slight or pronounced. http://forums.frontendaudio.com/index.php?showforum=8

    What next?

If I was in your situation: I would think about a couple of versatile large condensers and a pair of small condensers. Depending on your budget. LDCs: RODE NT2000 or Shure KSM44 or AT4050 or AKG414 XLS or CAD M179 or SP-B3 SDCs: AT4051s or Oktava MK 012s or SP-C4s or RODE NT5s or MXL...

    Firewire audio interface choices ???

Sounds promising. As I mentioned I've been in my early learning stage with a very basic 2 channel mic pre by Behringer. Which is probably similar to their mixer pres. Do you think the Tascam is any kind of step-up from that level regarding its pres ??? Also what other units did you consider, or...

    Cad M179 and GXL 3000

Sounds like Buzz Lightyear just got a home studio ! Thanks for the Link Klash. Have you ever had a chance to use an M179? If so how do they compare??? Chessrock: "Their GXL stuff is supposedly just off-the-shelf Chinese stuff." Does that mean the M179 is put together with more care and US...

    Cad M179 and GXL 3000

I see the GXL 3000 is going out the door very cheaply, does anyone know about this mic. It gets a similar description to the way people describe the often praised CAD M179. Does it share quality DNA with the M179 or is it a poor cousin ??? Sound on Sound Magazine Quote: "The multi-pattern...

    Firewire audio interface choices ???

Tascam or Alesis firewire ??? I've been using an entry level 2 channel mic pre with a PCI card and would like to move up to a firewire interface with at least 4 or even 8 decent mic pres. I've seen a couple of things like the TASCAM FW-1804 and the Alesis IO units and I think Phonic and Yamaha...

ADK Hamburg as a general purpose mic

The Sp-B1 has always worked pretty well as a vocal and guitar mic. Don't be fooled by its price. The NT5 is pretty good for guitar around the 14th fret but not too versatile on vocals. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun0...projectsb1.htm Also here's a thread that explores some good territory...

    What's the best budget multi-pattern LDC ???

Hi Ausrock, Thanks for the offer but at the moment I'm leaning towards the Cad M179 for its variable pattern. A friend is going to the US soon etc. But I'll ask around. How much are you wanting? I have a SP b1 and get a lot out of it. Whereabouts are you in the wide brown land? I'm up in the...

    What's the best budget multi-pattern LDC ???

Yes I saw them going for $70 at a couple of places. Here is one of the only reviews that I saw. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan06/articles/cad.htm The reviewer makes it sound a fair bit like the descriptions that some people on this thread and a couple of other recent threads have used...

Which stereo pair shall I choose?

THIS GUY DOES A GOOD DEAL ON THE mxl 603 PAIR http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=110128065325&rd=1&rd=1 AND I THINK THE NAIANT MSH MICS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE VERY USABLE. SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT HELP YOU FIND THOSE.

If you can't afford a U87 what's the next best thing???

Hi there, shoeless Joe here. Sometimes a newbie doesn't know the right question to ask, so my thanks to those who are constructing this erudite and informative thread. Like I said, a cup of tea might have helped. Also thanks to Chess and Don and Ritchie who were generous and solid enough to...

If you can't afford a U87 what's the next best thing???

Hi remember me... I've been drinking tea and lying down. A very helpful post and good info for the masses of folks trying to find their way through the branding jungle. The mics that use the hyped high end capsule ...SP, ADK and CAD are mentioned a lot in these pages. Can you recall which...

    NT3 vs. AKG c1000

I think the Rode NT3 would be a better choice. They give a very good result on acoustic instruments as well, but you would need a pop filter for doing vocals. If you already have a 57 I don't think a 58 is going to give you much else, and you may find that you get pretty good results with the...
