    October/November challenge

Trying something with the bridge...I want to show that turning the 'negative' around entails some struggle. Hence, "pull some sunshine through the rain". Now there’s a phrase, time has a way And tomorrow doesn’t have to be today Don’t start over – start again Pull some sunshine through the rain

    October/November challenge

Trying this on for the last verse: [CH] Coming home, the room is cool For my part, I feel a fool Coming home, the light is on My empty heart is nearly gone

    October/November challenge

Well, this is definitely going to be the most depressing song I have written...not much positivity around the theme of empty or emptiness! So...here is a first draft. GONE © 2009 Mike Pilling Empty house, empty streets Same old same old, just repeats Empty feeling in my soul You had gone...

OCt- Nov Challenge ~ GZ makes a start

Louis, you're supposed to start yer own thread...rules, you know! -Mike

These are my songs and this is me! PLEASE COMMENT.

I just have a few minutes before leaving for work, so will listen to more later. I listened to "Didn't Say No" and really liked it...smooth guitar driven soul ballad, along the lines of Mazzy Star or Corinne Bailey Rae. Great line "I didn't say no to you, I said no for you". Your voice is...

First song in a while..."A GIRL JUST LIKE YOU"

Thanks Chili - great advice, as usual. Just as an aside..... About 10 minutes ago I heard a 'new' Dylan song "It's All Good". He sings the whole song on one note. I shouldn't be so hard on myself! -Mike

First song in a while..."A GIRL JUST LIKE YOU"

Wow, SEDstar, that is some awesome advice! I agree, the verse and chorus, although having different chords, have a similar melody. I need to think on this. Guess that's what happens when you write too fast, melodic indigestion..... -Mike

First song in a while..."A GIRL JUST LIKE YOU"

Thanks one and all for your feedback. I guess I'm experimenting with different styles of music, and this is one of the results. GZ, I hear what you're saying, and I agree - but I don't really know how I can condense it; due to the slower tempo, the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus...

    When the Reaper Calls

Another winner, Joseph!! Very catchy melody, especially when you hit the title at the end of the chorus. Nice work. -Mike

First song in a while..."A GIRL JUST LIKE YOU"

I have been crazy busy at work the past 2 months, and have had a difficult time finding the hours necessary to write - never mind sitting down to hit the red button. It's a long weekend here in Canada - so, I seized the opportunity!! Typically for me lately, I wrote it this morning, and...

    Composing & chord progressions

Hmmm, Mr Honesty - it's amazing that you've got a full rack of red lights for your reputation. Do you ever say anything positive from the dank basement in your Mom and Dad's house? There are always two ways to say everything - the nice, helpful way....and your way.

    On a performance like this...

I couldn't hear anything "triggering" at all, and I don't think they are using Autotune either. -Mike

My newest song "BRIGHT NEW DAY"

It is actually finished now, Joseph, with this song. I know that it's a bit cumbersome to download an entire album from Soundclick, but that's the way it has to be, for now. If you do decide to download the "Breathe" album, the intended song order should be: 1. Summer Sun 2. Breathe 3. The...

    Songs for vocal recording purposes

No, the karaoke tracks are usually recorded in the same key as the original tune. I find ways to get around singing the really high notes that I can no longer hit. Usually it's only 1 or 2 notes in a song. -Mike

    Songs for vocal recording purposes

There are literally thousands of Karaoke tracks on iTunes alone. I have bought about 25 myself, just to add a little 'help' when singing for a crowd with just me & my guitar! I shudder to think of what is available for free. Most of them are really well done. -Mike

    Writer's block...

I can't believe nobody responded to this! This is awesome, and all joking aside, would make a great song, along the lines of "Short People". JMHO.... -Mike

    Blues shuffle with harmonies?

Lloyd, great job! If this is the result of it 'not going the way you intended', thank god for fortunate accidents. Love the repeating guitar riff. -Mike

My newest song "BRIGHT NEW DAY"

Dodgeaspen, thanks, I'm glad you like it. GZ, I actually had you in mind when I did the time shift to 3/4 and used the unexpected chords (G/B7/A/C#7). See, your feedback in the past has helped! -Mike

My newest song "BRIGHT NEW DAY"

Thanks for the feedback, famous beagle! Yes, I purposely went for a bluesy groove, to avoid the cliche of a sunny tune joining up with the sunny lyrics. There is actually no compression on the guitar, it's just super clean, with some slapback delay, played through my VOX amp, close-miked...
