I know, it's never been mentioned anywhere before and I've been reading alot on this preamp and that's what made me shy away from it. UK is 220v while the US is 120, it only makes sense their US models would allready be set up correctly before they ship to the US. And no one else seems to have...
Ok, here it is...
Well well well...
After looking into the DAV, I don't wish to buy a preamp that requires US conversion (no matter how simple). I'm looking for something that will work great straight from the box.
From this thread...
Maybe this will help. I came across a a thread on gearslutz.com where a guy was considering buying a BG1 and changed his mind cause he was told he'd have to reconfigure the something in the power source to comply with US current versus UK, so he bought another model instead. But I did contact...
I realise the the 103 isn't a tube mic but the Avalon 737sp is, that's what I meant. I sorta rationalised that what differences there are between the tlm 103 and ua-87 could be made up with the 737sp. I could be completely wrong about that but I guess we'll see. Next studio sesson is July 1 and...
I'm not buying a UA-87 :)
I want this 103 to work well and I like the idea of a tube sound. I also have a True Sound P-Solo on the way here now so we'll see how they compare.
So many different combos and opinions out there, my main goal is to just beathe some real life into the studio...
Appreciate the feedback from everyone. I did just order the the Avalon 737sp, might as well go the distance on this. I can't find anyone who says anything bad about the 737 + I have 45 days to give it a good test run..
Thanks again everyone..
Actually the TLM 103 does share the same casing and diaphram as the UA 87 and many of the reviews I've read real feel it performs well agaist the 87.., just opinions I guess.
How much of a difference in quality is there between these two mics? The TLM 103 gets trashed on gearslytz.com by just about everybody but user reviews on Musician's Friend, Music 123, ect are over the top with praise as a vocalist mic as well as an acoustic and amp..
I am looking for a...
I obviously misunderstood, and if 66g is best it would seem more sensible to set them all at that rate in the first place..
"actually it isnt exactly the same..same mic pre...but the BG2 has 22-66db of gain, where as the BG1 has 26-59. and yes, it is the heat.
Teddy"...
Allright.., 66 gain versus 59.., how much of a difference does that really make?
And about modding the BG1 to 66 gain. Someone stated earlier that it was set to 59 because of the heat issue, but DAV will mod it to 66 gain anyway.
If heat is the reason for it being set at 59 in the first...
They tell you on their site that shipping can be as long as a month due to demand so everyone is put on a waiting list, it's nothing out of the ordinary at all.
I did just order a Neumann TLM-103 and a True Systems P-Solo pre-amp to go with it. The P-Solo is single channel, pre-amp, but identical to a few much higher priced versions that have been in use for a few years allready.

I don't know if it was...
Is there any particular mic you would reccommend for the DAV-BG1?
And I'm looking at one of the Neumann mics I could actually afford and I see 2 versions of the Neumann TLM-103. One is a condenser and the other isn't. What is the difference between the two and which would you buy...
Reviews I've found support your claims on the DAV BG-1, I assume reliabilty is very good also?
And are there any U.S. dealers? So far I've only found 2, both located in the UK.
Foget the looks, I've been reading up on a few other pre-amps and reliability is an issue to. Some get bad marks for that but but the M-5 seems rock solid from what I can gather so far so I have no intention of paying retail, looks like $800-$900 will get me a nice one on the used market...
I'm using a pretty ancient studio as far as technology goes. And early 16 bit version of Cakewalk for mastering and we record to a DA-88 machine, the monitors are Alesis one but we still get pretty decent sound but I would like to improve it if possible. Would investing in something like an...
I'm trying to improve the sound at the studio I'm using now and this is one item that's got my attention..
I want to use it for better vocals and guitars abut the asking price is pretty steep. Anyone with experiance using these and would going the used route be advisable?
Do this..., Go to http://samash.com/ and fill out a credit application. If you manage to pay your bills on time you're good for 15 months @ 0% interest. Check out the Ibanes Artcore series of guitars they have there. Great quality at a great price, you won't regret owning. The 85 series and up...
